Cattle and Crops Predicted Strong Prices in 1929

Omaha appraisers from the Federal Land bank at their three day convention in Omaha forecast good prices for cattle hogs and corn through fall and winter. George Cruise of Massina Iowa noted 3000 bushels of corn sold at 90 cents a bushel and Harvey Hornby of Valentine said Cherry County now has the largest cattle herd in its history with profits rising for 1929.

Old Oregon Trail Conference Held at Fort Kearney Hotel

A statewide Oregon Trail conference will meet at the Fort Kearney Hotel in Kearney Nebraska on Saturday at noon. J G Masters of Omaha regional director for the Oregon Trail Memorial Association will preside. Old scouts and Indian fighters and state workers will share stories and discuss marking monuments and forming a Landmark Commission for Nebraska historical sites.

Bellevue proposal to preserve Mission House as state museum

Mrs. Robert C. Nichols of Bellevue urges securing the Mission House the state’s oldest building for a museum. The plan ties the $3,500 price to a penny‑donation drive by school children to honor the diamond jubilee. The site hosted early Presbyterian missions and Catholic visitors aiding Indians before the first mission house was built at Bellevue.

Thousands View Capitol Fair Week Visitors Count

About 42 000 people viewed the Nebraska capitol during state fair days. 6000 signed the guest book with entries from 467 Nebraska towns and 92 counties. Visitors came from 36 states and the District of Columbia, plus five foreign countries. Kansas led out of state guests with over 300, followed by Iowa Missouri Illinois. Fourteen foreign visitors included Canada Germany England Scotland Honolulu France.

Dawson Plans Celebration for Main Street Paving

Dawson officials plan a town celebration on September 18 to mark the completion of paving on Main Street over highway No. 75. The program includes speeches a band concert and other features. Traffic expected soon as dirt removal continues and equipment moves to Plattsmouth.

Nebraska bank closures hit Farmers State and Loretto State

Lincoln reports two Nebraska banks, Farmers State at Clarks and Loretto State at Loretto, were closed and placed under state management following board recommendations. Clarks bank carried 20 thousand dollars capital and 200 thousand dollars in deposits. G. R. Campbell served as president.

Central Power canal dredging near Kearney and other state items

Preparations to dredge silt from the Central Power company canal near Kearney are underway for the Platte river fall flow. The Federated church at Aurora seeks bids on a $30,000 rebuild rising from the burned Presbyterian church remains. State bank reserves are 36 percent per a report by Bank Commissioner Woods. Douglas Street Bridge owners seek $4.16 million for sale and lease cancellation. A Homer resident uncovered petrified mammoth teeth near Doniphan. Geneva votes on Sunday movies after six mail ballots. Beatrice readies a $6,500 fire truck bond issue and wartime-style flood damage costs. Efforts to irrigate Hamilton county from the Platte basin advance with wells already in operation. State game staff plan three weeks in Kearney to clear Bluehole and nearby lakes. a 25,000 fish shipment from Kimball will stock Blue Hole. Fairbury hosts an air carnival Sept 27–28 to fund an airport. Beatrice, Wymore, and Fairbury bands consolidate for summer concerts totaling 52 players. Nebraska’s 61st state fair sets a new attendance record at 487,660 over eight days, despite cooler weather and a smaller closing day.
