Funeral Rites Friday for Plane Crash Victims

Funeral services were held Friday for Gilbert Benson his son Ronald and Arnold Isaacson with over 500 relatives and friends attending outside the Braver Chapel. Ministers Rev Paul Walker and Rev A C Bates spoke. pallbearers included Benson classmates and local officials. The trio is buried in Swed ish Baptist cemetery near Polk and Aurora Cemetery for Isaacson. obituaries note Benson a progressive farmer and former school and elevator board member.

New Hordville Elevator Opens With 100000 Bushel Capacity

The concrete and steel elevator in Hordville starts operations with 70000 bushels capacity in the new structure plus the old east elevator, totaling 100000 bushels. It features 16 grain bins, a 400 bushels per hour belt, a 50 ton truck scale, and rail unloading, with contracts awarded to Tillotson Construction Omaha Humrich Electric Aurora Benson Plumbing Hardville Strand Lumber Polk Sundberg & Son Polk.

Showers For Bride To Be Doris Binford

A Wednesday September 7 kitchen and miscellaneous shower were held at the Ilof Ostberg home and the home of Mrs Glen Hill for Miss Doris Binford. Guests enjoyed games, colorful decorations, and gifts while a two course lunch was served.

Sale Barn at Stromsburg to Reopen Sept 20

The Stromsburg Livestock Commission Co. will reopen the Stromsburg sale barn on Tuesday September 20 with operators from Silver Creek led by Ben Lawrence and Charles Koza. Auctioneer Elmer Tooker to manage, veterinarian Dr. Wallace Monson of Osceola to attend each sale day.

Polk County 4 H winners at State Fair and premiums

Polk County Extension notes three Farm Bureau special awards at the county fair. Rugene Lees, Dennis Johnson, and the Merry Mixers Club received rosettes and Edick Anderson presented them. State Fair exhibits earned blues for Rogene Lees and others, red ribbons for Betty Lees and Betty Lees with Joyce Berger and Leona Hellstrom, and whites for several participants. The 4 H Song Contest featured Stuch by Stitch Club with a red ribbon, and the Collective Exhibit earned a Fifth Premium Ribbon on display in the Extension office.

Polio Emergency Drive Urges County Support

The National Foundation seeks funds for polio relief as the 1949 outbreak strains resources. September 8 to 15 is designated Polio Emergency Week, urging all citizens to donate to the county chapter or send to the Polio address via local post offices for redistribution to needy localities.

Farm Loan Assn Secretary Buried in David City

W. J. Stead, 56, long time secretary of the Polk and Butler County National Farm Loan Association, died September 1 at David City hospital after years of ill health. Funeral services were held September 4 in David City with interment in the Catholic cemetery. Alvin Grubaugh of David City was elected the new secretary by the board, succeeding Stead after 26 years of service in Butler County and continued merger duties since 1938.

Trio of Polk Men Killed in Dakota Plane Crash

Three Polk residents Arnold Isaacson 52 Gilbert Benson 46 and Ronald Benson 19 died when their four place Stinson plane crashed in fog near Sisseton South Dakota on a fishing trip from Canada. Isaacson bank president and Benson farmer were noted community pillars.

Womans Club Meets For Fall Gathering In Polk

The Polk Womans Club held its first fall meeting on September 13 at Mrs. R. L. Peterson home. Secret Pals from last year were revealed with members identifying baby pictures. The yearbook program was read for approval and hostesses were Mrs. Peterson Mrs. Henry Horstman and Mrs. M. W. Willett.

Legion Auxiliary Meeting and Social Schedule

The American Legion Auxiliary met Monday afternoon September 12 at the Legion Hall with the flag salute Star Spangled Banner and a business session led by President Mrs Margaret Jones. Reports from committees were heard then adjournment followed by a lunch for 25 members and two guests prepared by hostesses Mrs Oscar Sundberg Mrs Ella Dahlin Mrs Mc Coy and Mrs Henry Horstman. Sunday dinner guests at the Lloyd Hahn home included Mr and Mrs Guy Blanchard and Marlene of Cotesfield. Carl Steelquist of Lincoln visited in the afternoon. Supper guests were the Blanchards Mrs Ralph Wright and son of Cotesfield and Junior Peterson.

Veterans to receive subsistence checks in November

The Veterans Administration says most veterans entering school under Public Law 346 will not get subsistence checks until about November 1. Lincoln Regional Office Manager Ashley Westmoreland urged veterans to keep school and VA informed with complete accurate information and to report address or dependency changes promptly.

Young Adults Open Year Meeting at Floyd Miller Home

Polk Methodist Church Young Adults group held its first meeting of the year at the Floyd Miller residence. Twenty two members attended with hosts the Floyd and Mrs. Miller and the Lloyd Hahn couple. Mrs. Neal McNaught and Mrs. Merle Stromberg led the program.

First Floor Court House Closed Friday

The Board of County Commissioners announced that the first floor offices lobby and rest rooms of the Court House will close Friday September 16 to cooperate with the Red Cross Blood Program sponsoring the Mobile Blood Unit that day.

Nearly 200 relatives and guests attended the open house for Mr and Mrs Ford Shenk of Clarks marking their Golden Wedding Anniversary. They were married September 9 1899 in Central City Nebraska by Judge Patrick Heaton.
