County Republicans Attend Convention at Hastings

Polk County Republicans who attended the post primary convention at Hastings heard Governor Peterson and Harold Stassen speak at the Hastings chapel via national hookup. Representative Carl Curtis of Washington, D. C. served as toastmaster at the evening banquet. Mrs. Lloyd Hahn and N. G. Bender were chosen to represent the 25th District on the State Central Republican committee.

Record catches 18 pound 10 ounce catfish in town

Veteran fisherman Ilof Ostberg brought a massive catfish weighing 18 pounds 10 ounces to town. The event underscores ongoing efforts to land large freshwater catches.

New Organization Formed for Polk County Farmers

The Veterans Training classes in Polk County form the Foulk County Conservation Club with W H Pierce as sponsor. An organizational meeting is set for September 15 at 8 p m in the 4H building, Polk County Fair Grounds. Bruce Russell of Farmers National Company will discuss farm leases and landlord tenant relations.

Polk School News Sophomore Class Officers Elected

The Sophomore Class elected Gaylen Holmes as President Lois Miller as Vice President Virginia Harding as Secretary Annetta Seamons as Treasurer and Marilyn Hahn as News Reporter Dues set at 75 cents. Plans include a class party and a Meals for the Family unit.

Polk Woman's Club Opens Season In Park Gathering

The Polk Woman's Club met for its first session of the season with an outdoor event in the city park. The program, titled Our Town, outlines a year ahead. Officers include President N E McNaught and Vice President Merle Stromberg. Secretary Eldon Johnson. Treasurer Dean Myers.

Auxiliary Holds Meeting at Legion Hall

The American Legion Auxilary met at the Legion Hall on Monday September 11 at 2 30 p m with 28 members. Officers named committees for the year including Activity Music Rehabilitation Flower and Card Historian and News. The group voted to send 3 00 to the Los Angeles National Convention fund and noted the Grand Island Veterans Hospital opening. A Polk County Legion Convention Banquet is planned in October. A luncheon followed.

Sunny Sues 4-H Achievement Day Held at District Six

The Sunny Sues 4-H Club gathered at District six schoolhouse on September 9 with 11 members, eight mothers, Miss Crosby, and six visitors. Demonstrations included How To Sew On a Button, How To Stop a Nose Bleed, and Fainting. Barbara Carlson reported on the club’s work. members viewed a ribbon display and sewing boxes from the fair. A lunch of sandwiches, chips, cupcakes, ice cream, and Kool Aid followed.

Rally Day Observed by Methodists at Church

Rally Day will be observed next Sunday morning at the Methodist Church. Adults and children attend the church school at ten, remain for the 11 o'clock service, and families present or traveling far may be recognized. Officers and teachers participate in a consecration service with musical numbers including a welcome by Alvin Weber and solos and duets by members.

Tenth Anniversary Observed for Woman's Society Service

The Woman's Society of Christian Service marked its tenth anniversary at the Methodist Church on Thursday September 7 with over 75 women in attendance. The program featured readings by Mrs. McCoy and others, songs by Swede Plain Church singers, and talks on health and children in India United States. A birthday cake with ten candles appeared at the worship table as Mrs. Samuelson presided and other members served refreshments.

Merry Makers 4H Club Hosts Mothers Luncheon and Fair Walk

The Merry Makers 4H Club, led by Sharon Adelson with Sharon Hoffman assisting, handed in record books and discussed next year’s projects. Members answered roll call with favorite songs, showcased demonstrations, and learned tire changing during a trip home from Osceola fair.

Sheralee Hill Wins Purple Ribbon at State Fair

Sheralee Hill of the Pleasant Homemakers 4-H Club won a purple ribbon in the Foods Division at the State Fair for her loaf of white bread and earned a blue ribbon for a master-mix layer cake. To compete at State Fair, 4-H members must first win top county fair ratings in that division.

Rites Held for Ruth Marie Ostberg Infant

A short funeral service was held at Stromsburg Hospital for Ruth Marie Ostberg infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Donald Ostberg. Rev Paul Walker of Polk Methodist Church officiated. Ruth Marie weighed four pounds and was born September 7 at noon, dying the same day. Interment followed at Polk Cemetery.

State Fair Reflections and Notable Exhibits

Missionary Conference Ends With Farewell to Wylies

The First Baptist Church held the closing service of its Missionary Conference on Sept 5 honoring Mr and Mrs Albert Wylie of Nigeria Africa. A cash gift of 305 was given to aid purchase of a server refrigerator for their return. They depart for Wheaton Illinois to study before resuming field work next June.
