Democratic Caucus Set for September Nominating Local Officials

A Democratic Caucus is called for Tuesday evening September 13 at 8 o'clock to nominate a Road Overseer Justice of the Peace and Assessor. The meeting will be at the American Legion Hall. Postmistress Martha P Westfall delivered mail at nine o'clock after flood delays. Mr and Mrs C N Peterson and children returned Monday from a visit with friends in Denver and Colorado points.

Polk Picnic Plans Set for September Event

Plans are underway for the Polk Picnic on Saturday September 17 with a full day of entertainments. The program includes band concerts by the city and school bands, a ball game between oldtimers and the current team, a free motion picture cooking school, and races and contests in the afternoon. Evening sessions likely feature political speeches and a dance. Governor Cochran and Charles Warner have been invited to speak.

Foreclosure on Tools Tethers Warren over Unpaid Taxes in Newman Grove

Browning Warren who bought the Newman Grove State Bank notes last year took Julius Strand’s auto repair tools on a note from the bank. He stored them in the Swanson Auto Electric Building until removal. Madison County issued a distress warrant for uncollected taxes and seized the tools, to be sold next Friday. Warren holds several Newman Grove properties with long unpaid taxes.

Polk High enrollments rise with new building

Enrollment at Polk High School reaches 120 students this year, up from 114. Non-residents total 69 versus 63 last year. Grade School registrations are higher. arts and activity numbers include 18 in Dramatic Work, 45 Band, 25 Orchestra, and 16 Industrial Arts Club. NYA activity will start soon.

Caucus Results Named Local Republican Winners

The Republican caucus at city hall Monday night selected Theo Larson for assessor, Martin Baack for overseer, Carl Steelquist for committeeman, Mrs. Ellen Larson for committee woman, and I. T. Samuelson for justice of the peace.

John Deere Mixes Up Car Load of Corn Pickers

John Deere sent P. T. Wurtz & Son a car load of new corn pickers but the local implement dealers refuse unloading them. The machines are deemed unnecessary in the area this year, likened to ice boxes at the north pole.

Polk Club Seeks Gravel Road West of Osceola

A Polk Commercial Club committee led by Carl Steelquist met County Commissioners in Osceola on Tuesday to obtain construction of a gravel road west of town. Present from the area were P. T. Wurtz F. W. Davis and Albert Sundberg.

Harriet Herendeen and Virginia Dawson visited J A Westenius in Giltner and traveled to Columbus for further plans. Duane Ready has a broken collar bone from a Sunday incident and will recover. J E Parker and wife of Ymda Linda California, with two sons, visited Stromsburg relatives of Mrs Parker. plan to return to California later this week.

Shockey road trip and many weekend visits noted

Arborville residents W Bedient and Carl Bedient traveled from Sargeant Bluffs for a few days at home. The Shockey thresher crew held a Riverside Park picnic in Central City. Glenn Pickrel moved toward Oxford for teaching and was escorted by Mark Ramsey to tour the college town. A long list of visits and gatherings followed, with trips to Lincoln, Omaha, Central City, and York. Notable entries include hospitalization of Cleo Cramer and a 29th wedding anniversary at the Currens home.

Mission Festival at Immanual Lutheran Church

The annual Mission Festival was held at Immanual Lutheran Church. Rev. Rudwald of Hampton led the morning service and Rev. Erek of Lincoln preached the afternoon sermon. Rev. Peterson of York reported on the centennial convention held in St. Louis in June. Lunch was served in the church basement. both services were well attended.

Mrs. Maude T. Jones of Gray son La wed C. W Miller of Clarks in a 2:30 Tuesday ceremony conducted by the County Judge at Central City. This marks Miller’s third marriage. They plan to live on a farm near Clarks.

Popular Couple Observes 25th Wedding Anniversary

On Wednesday evening 115 relatives and friends gathered at the Will Blase home to honor a 25th wedding anniversary. Pastor C F Juergensen spoke and a mixed quartet sang “With The Lord Thy Taste Begin.” Cake and ice cream followed.
