Bean Days festival to entertain Polk this weekend

Polk Bean Days, an annual event for over a decade, hosts free beans and barbecued beef at noon Saturday. Miss Nebraska Teenager Susan Herman of Wilber attends the teen dance Friday and the parade Saturday morning, with Legion Post 160 organizing children’s prizes and a parade. Committees manage events, with barbecued food funded by local firms and beans supplied by Custom Farm Services and Meerkatz Land-leveling. Tractor pulls, races, and stage acts cap the day, ending with prize ceremonies and bicycles for children.

Hugo Person 50th Anniversary Observed at Hordville

Mr and Mrs Hugo Person were honored on their golden wedding anniversary Sunday August 31 at Baptist Church in Hordville. About 270 relatives and friends attended as the children hosted and grandchildren assisted with reception duties. Rev Winchester offered a brief message before the social hour. They wed September 6 1919 in Central City.

Mabel Lucado 82 Dies in Hastings Nebraska Educator

Mabel L. Lucado age 82 of Fairfield died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Village Hastings. A longtime Nebraska educator she taught in Clay county rural schools Fairfield Harvard Alliance Nelson Polk and other high schools and served on the University of Nebraska English faculty before retiring in 1956. Funeral services were held in Fairfield with burial at Fairfield cemetery. Survivors include her brother Thorton Lucado of Oklahoma City and cousins Milo Storrs Hastings and Addie Storrs Clay Center. Condolences may be sent to Mrs Milo G. Storrs Hastings.

Polk County Picnic Held In Colorado

A Polk County Nebraska picnic occurred August 24 at the Shelter House in Greeley Colorado with attendees from Greeley Engelwood Loveland Fort Collins Denver Sterling Milliken Boulder Commerce City Gothenburg and others. A noon picnic dinner followed by afternoon lunch and plans were made to hold the event again next year at Islands Grove Park in Greeley on August 30 at 12 30 PM.
