Gary Cole First Osceola Polio Victim

Polio struck in Osceola last Saturday when six year old Gary Cole contracted the disease and was taken to Omaha for treatment at Children’s Hospital. Hospital status was listed as not serious with the throat as the attack site. The article urges contacting doctors and local health authorities at first sign and explains March of Dimes support for medically indigent families.

Polk County Firms Add To Fair Cash Awards

Several firms and individuals contributed to cash awards for Fair winners. Contributions include 15 from First National Banks of Osceola and Shelby for State Club Week expenses, 10 from Stromsburg Bank for FFA Swine Showmanship, 7.50 from First National Bank of Stromsburg for Grand and Reserve Champion Baby Beef, 7.50 from Citizens State Bank of Polk for individual demonstrators, 5 from W. W. Norton for Dress Revue Song Contest and Top Booth, 5 from Farmers Co op Grain for Dairy and Beef Showmanship, and 5 from Smith Grain for Swine Showmanship. The awards supplement those already given by the Fair. full winner list will note recipients.

Polk County 4-H to Represent at State Fair

Polk County 4 H girls will represent at the State Fair with demonstration teams on A Summer Luncheon Cleaning Silver and Cleaning Rugs. Individuals Sheralee Hill Rugene Lees Betty Lees will judge in Foods Clothing and Homemaking. Teams Phyllis Branting Ruth Sigler Leona Hellstrom Joyce Berger enter Foods and Homemaking. The Stitch by Stitch Club from Stromsburg will enter the Song Contest.

Bridal Shower Honors Bernice Blase

A miscellaneous shower in the Lutheran church basement honors Miss Bernice Blase. Guests signed a scrapbook, water pink and blue decor surrounded the gifts, and Miss Blase opens presents as a story and songs accompany the event. She plans to wed Robert Porter of Denton on September 18.

York Visitors Attend Wilshusen Home Event

Mr and Mrs E Wilshusen and Mr and Mrs Raymond Sagehorn were visitors in the Carl Wilshusen home in York Sunday evening. Junior Smith of Peoria Illinois visited in the Van Bush home on Wednesday evening. The York Carl Wilshusen were Thursday visitors in the Raymond Sagehorn home. Mr and Mrs Ben Peterson visited in the Neil McNaught home in Lincoln Saturday. Miss Bernice Blase returned with them for the weekend.

Lincolnites in Accident After Visit Near Benedict

Mr and Mrs G F Brownfield and three children of Lincoln were injured in a Sunday afternoon auto crash seven miles west of Benedict while returning home from a visit with Mrs Hill. Mrs Brownfield suffered a skull fracture and several broken ribs. Mr Brownfield broke a shoulder. Patricia 7 and Patrick 13 both had serious injuries including a skull fracture and multiple bruises. Jack Newton driver of the other car was hospitalized with non serious injuries. All were treated at York hospital. The Brownfield car was destroyed. Newton’s car was heavily damaged. Newton is from Hastings.

Gwendolyn Eaton Engaged At Community Party

More than 200 guests from Merrick Polk and York gathered at Clarks Youth Center to honor the engagement of Hope Gwendolynn Eaton, president of Tri County Christian Endeavor Union, to LaVerne E Nicholson of Grand Island. The couple plans to marry next summer after college.

New Street Lights Shine On Polk Highway and Town

Rolland Dahlin and crew installed twelve Whiteway street lights on Polk highway this week. The lights use 500 watt bulbs and cast light along the road. Old fixtures will be moved behind the Progress office Stromberg's Grocery and the Home Service Store.

Pleasant HomeMakers Shine at Polk County Fair

The Pleasant HomeMakers 4-H Club from Osceola earned blue ribbons for two milk pasteurizing demonstrations by Sheralee Hill and Marilyn Hahn and for a pie crust with milk by Shirley Stevens and Sondra Hill. Their Safety First book won first premium, secretary’s book won first ribbon, and song contest entries also earned blue ribbons. Sheralee Hill's Walk in The 4-H Way poster will go to the State Fair. she will compete in state food judging after Polk County honors.

Whitacres and friends vacation across northern Michigan

Mr and Mrs W R Whitacre and Dorothy and Mrs Olaf Alfreds returned from a week at a cabin in northern Michigan. Rev and Mrs A C Bates of Table Rock stayed with the Pearsons before a longer vacation trip with Arthur Bates. Willard Adelson joined John Johnsons for supper near Swede Home as a family reunion celebrated their mother's birthday anniversary. Callers at Martin Baach home included multiple local families from Hampton and North Platte.
