In a late October 1970 Progress note, readers recall an early snowstorm that dumped wet snow tall enough to warrant a snow shovel. The piece reflects on shifts in farming, auto use, and land prices, plus local rainfall reports and lawn mowing woes as winter looms.
Henderson Huskies defeated the Polk Cubs 20 to 6 at Polk Stadium. Key plays included early Husky drives, a 12 yard pass for a touchdown, and late first half scoring as Henderson stretched a lead while Polk struggled with fumbles and stalled drives.
Ida Kristina Meline born December 30 1893 in Freluga Sweden died October 16 1970 after a short illness at Aurora Memorial Hospital age 76. Survived by three sons David Philip Paul two daughters Ed Hanson Hannah eight grandchildren eleven great grandchildren and a sister brother in Sweden and Corad. Funeral at Polk Evangelical Free Church October 19. Interment Lindale Cemetery.
Osceola’s Lowel Hanson and Benedict’s Mrs. Mervin Rystrom each missed only two of 16 football picks in a local contest. Hanson won $5 with a tie-breaker score forecast for Hardville Monroe. Rystrom predicted Monroe 16 0. Kisler had ten misses. Miller and Ring each had three misses. Carlstrom and Bankson were among others noted.
Fridhem Lutheran Church in Hordville celebrated its 90th anniversary with services on Oct 17 and 18, 1970. Dr. Raymond Lingwall of Des Moines spoke, a piano solo by Jolene Weburg occurred, and a pot luck dinner followed. The program included reminiscences, choir and organ music, greetings from local pastors, and a roll call of confirmation classes.
The narrator recalls a year of visiting Lincoln wig salons with a friend, laughing at their reflections and trying numerous wigs. They note husbands’ disapproval and the dramatic transformation wigs offer, ending with a tongue in cheek view of unveiling the real self after removing a full disguise.
Wayne Pop Hill marks his 98th birthday on Thursday October 29 at York Manor. He welcomes cards and visits from friends.
Mr and Mrs Floyd Merchant Allen and Mr and Mrs Robert Merchant brought lunch to the Mc Coy home on Sunday to help Mrs Laura Merchant celebrate her 88th birthday.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Naslund were Thursday evening visitors of Mrs. David Sundberg. The Deacons of the Baptist Church met at the Elwood Sandell home after church services Sunday evening.
