About 100 gardening enthusiasts turned up at Ringling Bros circus at the International Amphitheater to shovel a half ton of mineral iron organic fertilizer left by performing animals. Circus management offered it free daily 10 am to noon, saving an estimated $6,000 in hauling costs.
Polk Cub football coach Owen's team beat Greeley 20 to 6 for their second win and 2-5 season mark. Key plays included a Shenk to Hudson TD and a Branting score after an interception, with Osceola upcoming in a conference tilt.
The state bicentennial convention will be held at the Ramada Inn in Kearney on November 12. The committee chairmen have invitations and will invite members and families. Polk committee members should contact Lucile Tyler. A full day program ends with a party and dance, Sunday evening lunch guests in the Syd Widge home in Marquette to honor Sydney and Christopher's October birthdays. Mr and Mrs Kenneth Nybloom of Marquette host.
Polk volleyball saw its six game win streak end as Lakeview of Columbus defeated Polk 15 5 and 15 11 in the Stromsburg Invitational. Lynette Flodman and Darla Sterns each had four serving points, with Lesley Jones leading Polk in spikes and strong setters aiding rallies. Lakeview later beat Stromsburg and Shelby to win the tournament, while Polk prepares for Goldenrod Conference action at Cedar Rapids with a first game on October 19 and a potential rematch on October 21.
Senior Citizens host a card party on October 26 at 2 00 p m at Legion Hall with neighbors and friends invited to socialize and play.
William Bedient, 76, of Lincoln died Monday at Memorial Hospital in Aurora after months of failing health. Funeral services are set for Friday at 2 00 p.m. at Arborville Congregational Church with Rev John Mc Curdy officiating. Burial follows in Arborville Cemetery. Born September 15 1900 in Amboy Illinois to Fred and Katie Bedient he later lived in Arborville Polk and York before moving to Wichita Kansas in 1943 to work as an inspector at Cessna Aircraft. He retired in 1964 to Sun City Alabama and returned to Nebraska later. He married Enid Fisck January 10 1924 in Grand Island. Survived by wife Enid of Lincoln two sons Glen Boise Idaho LeMoyne Eugene Oregon one daughter Audrey Getty Logan Kansas one brother Harold York and six grandchildren. Preceded by parents a sister Eva Stark and a brother Herbert.
The American Legion Auxiliary plans a Halloween party for Polk Community preschoolers and kindergartners on Wednesday October 27 from 2 00 to 3 30 p m at the Legion Hall.
The Nebraska State Health Department and Polk County Medical Association host a mass immunization at Polk grade school gym on Thursday October 28 1976 from 5 to 6 pm. Adults 18 to 45 receive monovalent vaccine while those 45 and older or chronically ill get bivalent vaccine. under 18 not immunized.
The Swede Plain United Methodist Women met in the church parlors on Wednesday afternoon October 13. Mrs Robert Clymer opened with prayer and led the business session. Alvena Lind led the program with scripture and prayers. Readings included two poems by Helga Widga and Agnes Lindgren. A vocal duet by Maxine Garner and Marie Clymer followed. Alvena Lind read You Don’t Need to be Discouraged. Hostesses were Dorothy Dahlin and Janice Widga.
Mr and Mrs Glen Ernst of Columbus and Mr and Mrs Horace Stevens were Tuesday evening guests at the Tom Stevens home honoring the wedding anniversary of Horace and his wife and the birthday of Mrs Glen Ernst.

Kathleen Junge underwent major surgery at St Elizabeth hospital Lincoln on Thursday. She is the daughter of Mrs Wilda Holmes Polk and Mr Arnon Dover. Dover is a patient in York hospital critically ill from a fall at a hotel. Mrs Walter Stohl returned home Friday from a week at Lincoln General Hospital Lincoln.
