A lighthearted Polk County weather note covers August rainfall totaling 28.21 inches for the year and September rains, the first fall freeze, and gardeners extending blooming with plastic flowers. The column also riffs on fall fashion, unusual news from October papers, hippie yearnings, and a Nebraska voter registration update with a satire on marital status questions.
The local weatherman estimates about half an inch of rain last Friday, with the rain gauge at the sprinkler showing six inches and another reading near half an inch at the elevator. Yearly total stands around 30.65 inches as trees begin color and farmers near harvest of corn and milo. Lindsay Darnell shot a wild boar with bow and arrow last Sunday but plans no immediate meal.
Archie Bus Stevens, 64, died in his sleep Monday night or Tuesday morning at his Arriba Colorado residence. News reached Polk at noon Tuesday. He farmed wheat in eastern Colorado and spent winters in Polk with his mother Mrs Mabel Stevens, usually returning in October. Funeral arrangements are not known. his body will lie at Wall Funeral Home in Polk.
In wet conditions Polk Cubs beat Palmer Tigers 25 to 6 to claim their third Goldenrod Conference win. Palmer capitalized on an early fumble then Sundberg sparked Polk with a kickoff return and key runs and passes leading to four Polk touchdowns including Sundberg and Stevens big plays.
Polk High School reverts to Class D in state athletics after listing 52 boys in high school, below the 55 threshold separating Class C and D this year, ending several years in Class C.
Richard G C Widga born February 22 1893 near Polk Nebraska died October 6 1967 at the Good Samaritan Center Osceola aged 74 years 7 months and 14 days. He lived as a farmer near Polk and later retired there. He married Frances Anderson March 31 1915 and had three children. Survived by widow Frances two sons Donavia Polk and Charles a daughter Mrs William Ferrand Omaha ten grandchildren six great grandchildren one brother Melcher Polk four sisters Mrs Lee Schneder Lincoln Mrs Sigurd Anderson Tacoma WA Mrs Joe Cotter South Gate CA and Mrs George Hanchette San Pedro CA. Services were held October 9 at Polk Methodist Church with Rev. Willis Patten officiating. Interment Stromsburg Cemetery.
The American Legion Auxiliary held a meeting on Monday October 9 with Nancy Kisler reporting on the Girls State program at Lincoln last June. Anna Kisler ran the business session and Janice Saylor led the music program. District 7 convention notes were given by Margaret Brockevelt Joyce Baack Elaine Stromberg Anna Eisler Laur etta Neuhaus and others attended. A lunch for 16 was provided by Donna Werner Joyce Baack Frances Litty and Verlene Anderson.
Mark Wood, a Palmer 16 Junior back, reached the 5 for a first down as Joel Stevens pushed for a TD. the extra point failed. In the final four minutes coach Gary Warden rotated players on a muddy field with clean white uniforms standing out. Palmer advanced mainly through passes but time expired at the Polk 9. next Friday Palmer travels to Henderson for a non conference game against the Huskies.
The post office returns Tuesday to its corner location after months in a dark temporary quarters three doors west. New furnishings adorn the old site and mail boxes now open with keys, eliminating combinations. Patrons complain the low boxes force stooping for mail retrieval.
Members of American Legion Post No 160 at David City district convention were awarded a Special Citation for the most outstanding Child Welfare work in the district over the past year. The district comprises Platte Colfax Dodge Polk Saunders and Butler counties.

James Green 17, son of Mrs. Keith Brown of Springfield and Harold Green of Hastings, became an Eagle Scout at a court of honor held at Maple Elementary School in Springfield Oregon. He is a senior in high school, member of Troop 391 sponsored by Maple School PTA, and has earned the Order of the Arrow and Gold Quill. He attended Camp Baker near Florence and serves as senior patrol leader. He works part time in the Springfield News circulation department.
