Nebraska eyes Niobrara island as game refuge
Lincoln officials report a 520 acre Niobrara River island near Niobrara town offered to Nebraska as a game and bird refuge and public recreation ground. Four game and park board members toured the area praising its potential to be deeded to the state at no cost for improved public use. Governor Weaver chaired the board during a related 5000 attendee picnic on the island. The land hosts a golf area and timbered woods with quail, beaver, muskrats, mink, and other game birds.
