Polk general stores will close on Wednesday evenings starting October 14 with Saturday night as the only open weekday night for fall and winter. An announcement appears on another page of this issue.
The Progress office has moved to the Bergman building on Main Street and is settling in. This issue is printed in the Osceola Record plant at Osceola due to unintended alterations that were unnecessary to make on our presses.
The Hugo Players will perform in Polk at Viking Hall on Saturday October 10 at 8 30 PM. Harry Hugo leads the troupe with a cast including Fred Allison son of local residents. Tickets available from local merchants for the opening night.
Polk County 4-H reports from Agricultural Agent Kelly show 129 youths enrolled in 1936, up from 89 in 1935. Members produced beef, hogs, corn and clothing, learned budgeting and diets, and exhibited successfully at the Polk County fair Columbus and the state fair. Bertha Richter won a first prize in a state fair style division. Plans indicate 4-H will play a large role in 1937 extension work.
Editorial argues Nebraska should repeal the stockholders double liability provision for state banks. It notes federal and state reforms protect depositors, calls the clause relic of wild cat banking, and urges voters to support the repeal on November 3 to modernize the banking system without reducing depositor protections.
A dense list of Sunday visits and social gatherings across Swede Home and nearby towns. Families including the Fredricksons Forss Ekstroms Johnsons and Andersons hosted meals, dinners, and birthday greetings. The Loup Valley Pastoral Association met at Swede Home Church with strong attendance.

Hordville community chatter centers on Sunday dinners with Nelson Ellison families and neighbors from Hampton Arborville Sweedeberg York and Polk. Attendees include the Nelsons Schpee Ericks ons and Ottergren families along with church services and twin newborns news.
Elaborate preparations have been completed for the County-Wide Republican Rally in Stromsburg this Thursday starting at 2 00 p m Speakers include Arthur J Denny Richard Johnson George Williams William Burkett Dwayne Swanson and Dr Carl E Haterius The rally features a Republican banquet a Women’s Tea and a Landon Knox Ball with music by Jimmy Canton and his 9 piece orchestra Evangeli st meetings are under way at the Stromsburg Baptist Church led by Rev John Taylor Local social notes cover visits and gatherings across Stromsburg Arborville Benedict and nearby areas.
The Country Women's Club met at Mrs. Emil Person's home with Mrs. Elmer Sandburg assisting. Nineteen members and three visitors attended the in school days event and enjoyed a two course luncheon. The Twentieth Century Club gathered with Mrs. David Dornburgh. thirteen members and five visitors attended with a lesson on Wills and Codicils led by Mrs. C. Flick.
The Immanuel Lutheran Church will conduct combined services Sunday at 7 30 led by Rev. Degner of Lincoln Creek in both German and English. Local residents visit relatives and friends across towns including York, Omaha, Central City, and Fairbury with many families hosting gatherings and dinners.
President Roosevelt will address a crowd at the Ak-Sar-Ben coliseum in Omaha on Saturday night. He is also scheduled to speak from the capitol steps in Lincoln at 3 PM on Saturday afternoon.
Several Polk boys joined the York College football squad this fall. Walter Ekdahl is in his second season and has impressed in the backfield. Freshman Don Wright shines at fullback and starred in the York Hebron game. Other players who saw action include Carl Bedient Kenneth Willits Raymond Peterson Thompson Allison and Carl Bedient.
A petition signed by more than 400 Polk County farm operators triggers a fall ballot question on county board funding for a county agent. The measure previously failed years ago. Under the new law a petition meeting the required signer count places the issue before voters. only qualified farm operators may sign, though all voters may cast ballots.
