Cubs Triumph 6 0 Over Clarks In Friday Contest

The Cubs secured their third conference win by edging Clarks 6 to 0 at home. Polk opened with a 65 yard drive, Richard Brockevelt added a one yard score, but miscues limited further scoring. Clarks’ Rod Pollard gained on five yard runs while the Cubs’ defense held them from adding points. The teams are set to meet again Friday with Clarks visiting Genoa and Polk hosting Palmer.

Irene Carlson and Lyle Widga wed in Polk ceremony

Irene Carlson and Lyle Widga were married September 20 at 4 pm at the home of the bride’s family with a double ring ceremony by Rev. Harold Jensen of Swede Plain Methodist Church. Attendants were Mrs. Lloyd Lind and Lester Widga. The couple left for a wedding trip to the Ozarks and plan to reside on a farm east of Polk.

Former Polk Banker Calmer McCune Dies in Haxtun Colo

Calmer McCune 88 a former Polk banker died at Haxtun Colorado hospital Sunday. Born in Stromsburg he graduated there. He moved to Haxtun 40 years ago and ran a bank along with real estate and insurance. Funeral services were held Tuesday. Survived by wife Ellen Haxtun son Calmer Jr Seattle and Wesley Washington, D C.

Garden club windows feature nautical and harvest displays

Polk Garden Club presents two window scenes in the former Kroger building. The north window shows Columbus Discovered America theme with sailing ships, Indians teepees, tropical creatures, and flamingos. The south window depicts a fall harvest with corn stalks gourds and squash.

Hastings Teen Sheralyn Meerkatz Seeks Get Well Cards

Cards would cheer 15 year old Sheralyn Meerkatz of Hastings who, after a second back surgery, is bedfast with a partial cast. Daughter of Mrs Darlene Meerkatz, she underwent vertebrae fusion to correct a curvature and faces at least six more months in bed. The family formerly lived in Polk. Sheralyn, who had a light polio case earlier, will soon return home from Mary Lanning hospital.

Burg Senior Reigns at G I Harvest of Harmony

Stromsburg high school senior Linda Peterson was crowned queen of Grand Island’s 23rd Harvest of Harmony after a parade featuring 46 marching bands and about 2,600 participants. She was selected from 30 candidates with attendants Vicki Hakansan Edgar and Margaret Bartle from St Paul.

Polk county volunteers attend Nebraska TB district meeting

Mrs M R Anderson and Mrs Bert Gissler of Osceola attended an educational district TB meeting in Grand Island. Gissler cited topics on TB control, public education on respiratory diseases, and increasing Christmas Seals donations. National cases rose to 54,000-plus from 53,300 the prior year. Open house for Clair Willits 80th birthday set for Stroms Sunday October 18.

Polk County Reappraisal Starts This Week

The reappraisal of rural property in Polk County began this week. Richard Moyer of Justin H Haynes, hired by the Polk County Board of Commissioners, will inspect farms in township 15 1 161 and 162. All county properties must be reappraised under 1963 state law. Houses and outbuildings will be inspected inside and measured outside.

Polk County Auxiliary Holds September Convention

The Polk County American Legion Auxiliary met Wednesday afternoon hosting fourteen guests from Osceola Shelby and Stromsburg units. Officers elected for the coming year were Velma Stephens Shelby county president John Scholz Shelby vice president and Martin Anderson Osceola secretary treasurer. Mrs Haseloh spoke on auxiliary work and Mrs Uehling reported on the Dallas Texas convention. A Polk high school Girls Trio sang two numbers and slides showcased Veterans Hospitals and the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Nebraska. Door prize went to Marjorie Fonda of Osceola. Refreshments were served by local members.
