The Polk Commercial Club’s Hobby Lobby Show closed as a historic success with many exhibits returned to owners. Highlights included a 1912 Buick touring car, a horse drawn hearse from 1918, an antique Bible, a muzzle loading shotgun, and an Edison Phonograph. The club thanks all who assisted and plans a similar event next year.
A Polk County delegation of about twenty farmers and cooperators will travel to Omaha next Tuesday, November 28, for the finish-up of the statewide Pasture-Forage-Livestock program. The group will discuss common problems and honor progress in farm and range practices. Members named include Paul Monson Gilbert Johnson Henry Olson Elton Berck Frank Bard Charles Walgren Arthur Deeter Wallace Fredrickson Gordon Fredrickson W W Berck E A Hedlund Herman Jones John M Staroscik Homer Brigham August Thelen Lynn Brigham Robert Taddiken Bruce Anderson Arthur Morrill Jr R L Smith of Polk and other cooperators from Pell County.
Emergency crop and feed loans for 1940 are available to Polk County farmers with applications taken at Osceola Nebraska by R J Jelnick Field Supervisor Farm Credit Administration through the county agent office. The program aims to aid areas affected by drought or flood and targets farmers with small cash needs who cannot obtain loans elsewhere.
The Mid-Nebraska District Meeting and Special Session of Grand Lodge 1.0.0.F. of Nebraska met with Viking Lodge No. 328 at Polk on November 15, 1939. Grand Master Worner L. McKelvie and Grand Secretary E. S. Davis led the session. five Past Noble Grands received the Past Grand and Grand Lodge Degree. Sixty-seven Odd Fellows from twelve lodges, including Central City Chapman Belgrade Fullerton Clarks Silver Creek Schuyler Columbus Shelby Osceola Marquette and Polk, attended. An after-session banquet served to sixty by the Baptist Missionary Ladies. a public-evening program followed. Mayor A. Isaacson welcomed, with S. E. Widman replying.
Week after week our printing line produces sale bills for farmers that draw large crowds. An order for a farmer sparked intense bidding, including selling his mother in law and mortgage to drive away competition. The scene grew chaotic with neighbors and strangers bidding up livestock, weeds, even a gold brick. We cannot report final results yet as more bids arrive.
This week the Merchant's Good Will Programs present the third Saturday of a popular Question and Answer evening. Larger crowds attend each event with growing audience enthusiasm. The format mirrors Dr IQ and invites friends to Polk Theatre Saturday for a fun evening with prizes not guaranteed.
The reminiscence recalls Polk Nebraska’s 1906 07 boom as railroad surveys, horse powered grading, rapid town development, and shifting sites from Lucella to Polk. The Ladies Aid of the Methodist church held a Thanksgiving themed gathering in the church parlors on Thursday afternoon. Devotions led by Mrs. A Sundberg, program coordinated by several members, readings on thankfulness and a portrayal of the first Thanksgiving with Pilgrim attire and an Indian costume. A social hour followed with refreshments served by the hostess group.
In Polk the Alfred Anderson home hosted friends and relatives on Monday November 20 to celebrate his 80th birthday. The event featured musical numbers by local performers, readings and prayers, Swedish language song, and a closing serenade by Lillian Brown. Refreshments and a floral cake accompanied by bouquets were presented to Mr. Anderson.

Miss Frances James of Erie Illinois daughter of Mr and Mrs Ralph James wed LeRoy Beckstrom of Sterling Illinois son of Mr and Mrs Andrew Beckstrom of Clarks Nebraska in the Clinton Iowa Methodist church parsonage. The ceremony was at 1230 pm with Rev J B Ackman officiating. Attendants were Miss Rae Finnicum and Gordon Beckstrom of Erie.
The Progress extends a Thanksgiving offer to new subscribers in the local trade area. Between Friday, Nov 24 and Saturday, Dec 2 readers may enroll for one year at 50c, with mail orders given prompt attention. The note emphasizes this is the last chance to pay under 1e per week for the local paper.
On Friday November 24 at 8 pm the Junior Class will stage Tempest and Sunshine in the high school auditorium. The Kentucky plantation setting centers on Joshua Middleton and his wife Nancy with romance from Julia Tempest and Fanny Sunshine. Reserved seats cost 25c for adults and students. 10c bleacher seats for children.
