Autumn warmth fills Polk area as harvest winds down and fall air clears. Community events include Red Cross first aid classes, voter registration drives at St Marys Hall and Polk Hotel, and debates on Americanism versus liberalism, with local residents noting travel and postal reminders for Christmas.
Polk High coach Karl Adamson lists 23 hopefuls for the season opener with Hampton on December 1. Six lettermen return led by seniors Ken Carlstrom Joel Stevens Tom Stevens Charles Schenk and Steven Carlstrom plus juniors and sophomores expected to see significant action. The schedule includes a Stromsburg tournament on December 27-28 with Clarks Centennial Utica and Stromsburg. Game times are 7:00 and 8:30 P.M.

Mr and Mrs Ernest J Ratliff of Trenton Missouri will observe their fiftieth wedding anniversary Sunday November twenty six from two to four pm at the Lakeview Cafe in Trenton Their home was north of Bradshaw from nineteen seventeen to nineteen forty when they moved to Trenton Their daughter Josephine Mrs Harold Mitchell of Waitsburg Washington plans to attend and invites friends and relatives to be present for the occasion.
The Baptist Mission Circle gathered at the church for its regular monthly meeting on November 9. Mrs Dwayne Miller led devotions and presided over the business session with Mrs Ted Otte. An program on Higher Education Involves Me featured several members and guest hostess Mrs Ivan Johnson. A Thanksgiving themed lunch followed with hostesses listed.
Master Chief Fire Control Technician Deland Flodman, son of Mr and Mrs Carrol Flodman of Polk, received the Navy Achievement Medal aboard the USS Canberra. His citation credits leadership and professional skill in numerous gunfire support missions from October 11, 1966 to April 10, 1967. Flodman entered service in July 1955 after graduating from Polk High School.
The local Legion Auxiliary met with servicemen’s mothers and wives as guests. President Anna Kisler led the business session and a 50 cent Christmas gift exchange was set for December. Beverly Willits Shelly Ramsey Jolene Myers performed and Kay Nielsen accompanied. Miss Larry Coover showed slides of Germany. Hostesses Doris Ostberg Clara Anderson Anita Kisler and Fern Myers served lunch.
Mr and Mrs Leon Meerkatz announce the birth of a baby boy Lance Wade on November 5 weighing 6 pounds 5 ounces. Mr and Mrs Gene Warin of Milford welcome a baby girl Nancy LaVae born November 4 weighing 6 pounds 10.44 ounces, with the mother Nadine Shultz Waring formerly.
Miss Patricia Funk of New York employed by American Telephone and Telegraph Co. is spending the week visiting home folks. Mrs Mary Halleck of Long Beach and her daughter Mrs Vivian Ericson from Minnesota were Friday afternoon callers on Mr and Mrs Ernie Lott.
An evening of musical enjoyment with Polk Junior and Senior High vocalists will be held Tuesday Nov. 21 at 7 30 p m in the high school auditorium. Large and small ensembles will perform ranging from swingle singers to old American folk songs and selections from modern musicals. Everyone is welcome.
Union Pacific reports ample equipment to meet grain needs during the harvest. President Edd H. Bailey notes shortages are not anticipated if unloading is prompt. The line has added 3,652 new 40 foot box cars and 2,083 covered hopper cars in the last two years.
The Westside Birthday Club met Monday afternoon at Mrs Henry Eisler’s home with 9 members and 3 visitors. Guest Mrs Harold Miller, a former member, attended. Mrs Don Miller joined as a new member. Mrs Paul Strand led entertainment and Password. The club honored birthdays of Mrs Mervin Samuels and Mrs Larry Killiam. An all hostess lunch was served.
A Lincoln social security representative will visit Osceola on November 20. The session runs 9:00 to 11:00 am on the courthouse second floor helping local residents with social security matters.
Mrs Robert Willits was discharged Sunday from Osceola hospital and returned home, marking a routine domestic medical release.
