Impressions Of Nebraska Territory By Henry Burt 1857 Letter
Henry M. Burt describes his trek from Northampton to Nebraska Territory and Omaha in a May 1857 letter preserved by the State Archives. He notes the journey from Davenport to Council Bluffs and Omaha, comments on soil and timber along the Missouri, and weighs Westward prospects against East comforts and refined society. Burt ultimately says he is not sorry he came West and envisions possible return if needed.
