Sunny Sues 4-H Club Meeting Highlights Cooking Demo

The Sunny Sues 4-H Club met at the Carlsons with Barbara Carlson and Martha Creech as hostesses. Members joined by pledge and roll call, minutes approved, a sugar cookie demonstration was given, and members planned cupcakes for cooking study. Lunch followed the adjournment with games chosen by Lynda and Delores.

Pulsed into Service Lincoln Dial System Startup

Pork's new dial telephone system began operating Tuesday at 10 00 am replacing the old switchboard. Mayor Marvin Fredrickson made the first call to Merle M Hale as 419 phones switched with minimal service interruption. The upgrade, started in 1949, included rebuilding lines plus a new building and 122 exchanges, 71 now dial. Shelby and other Polk County exchanges will join later this year.

Work on Polk sewer system to begin soon

Workmen and machinery for the new sewage system in Polk are arriving and will soon be in full swing. The construction company backs the project to be completed by mid August, addressing doubts about timely completion.

A new fire reporting system coincides with a dial telephone switch over. Call 2221 and wait for an answer, then confirm your name and address to ensure accurate receipt. Five public fire phones at local sites plus private homes serve the system, with two whistles to trigger sirens from the Fire Hall or Barber Shop.

Commencement honors mark Class of 1951

The Class of 1951 graduation was held May 17 in the High School auditorium with thirteen graduates. C. K. Burkholder of Midland College gave the address The Keys To The School. Everett Green presented diplomas and eighth grade awards. Richard Rosno and Dennis Light led as valedictorian and salutatorian respectively, each earning multiple scholarships. An all school picnic ended the week indoors due to rain.

Village Board Sprays Town to Combat Insects

Agriculture Census Reveals Polk County Farming Facts

The 1950 Polk County Census of Agriculture shows 130465 acres owned by farm operators and an average farm size of 204.8 acres. Total land under cultivation reached 265983 acres. One farm exceeded 1000 acres. Rural areas had 821 telephones and 1151 electricity customers. Machinery included 615 grain combines 765 corn pickers 545 trucks 1451 tractors and 1646 automobiles. Livestock counted 1299 horses and mules 5110 milk cows 265889 hogs and pigs 1689 sheep and 116950 chickens four months or over.

Witnesses Urged to Help Stop Highway Dumping

The Nebraska State Highway Department urged witnesses to testify against drivers who dump trash on the highway right of way. A letter from Stroms burg reported dumping off the Blue River bridge on Highway 66 east of Polk with a truck license number and multiple witnesses. The department said action requires willing witnesses and noted annual cleanup costs of 20 to 25 thousand dollars, plus repairs from damaged mower blades and tires.
