The Polk Municipal Band will open its summer season next Wednesday evening June 6 in the band shell under director S A Ramp. The concert marks Polk's spring opening and stores will stay open until 11 00 p m on Wednesday evenings all summer.
Polk County opened the 7th War Loan Drive on May 14 and reported purchases totaling 104 118 75 the next day. Out of county landlords such as Walter Pelter Katherine Zimmerman Ray Gilchrist Josephine Zeller and Wm Kline aided the effort with bond purchases this week. War Finance Office offers free V mail stationery Another Bond Between Us at AAA War Finance Office and local banks and post offices.
Local social notes list visits and gatherings across Hordville Shelby and surrounding areas. Families such as Eldon Johnsons in Rork Island and Emersons in Brush share dinners and recognition night attendance. Birth announced for John Leroy. multiple couples and relatives host and visit in weekly exchanges.
Several service members visit family in Stromsburg and nearby towns. Rudolph Blin S1c ends a fifteen day leave and heads to New York for sea duty. Lyle Widga and Victor Johnson Jr return home on furlough before remaining service assignments. Richard Gustafson departs Camp Hood Texas after a furlough with his parents.
Mr and Mrs Fred W Bedient and family host Rawleigh VanHousen and others for Sunday dinner. Miss Thais Belle Lackey returns from Cortland for summer at Fremont. Arborville Missionary Society met at Mrs Will Cline’s with Mrs R B Merchant leading. Numerous guests visit and dine at homes of Otte Bedient Lackey Merchant and related families through the week.
Rev L M Albrecht former pastor at Greens Chapel delivered the address titled Making Friends at the county eighth grade graduation exercises Saturday afternoon The ceremony at the Methodist Church featured Maurine W Schuman organ demonstration and performances by Anabel Mytholar Margaret Nelson Colleen Malek Diana Buhl Jeanice Schott Florence and Frances Shockey Evelyn Babcock and others County Superintendent Oliver McBeth presented diplomas to 110 graduates.
Decoration Day is set for Wednesday May 30 at 10 o clock in the Polk High School Auditorium. The local event invites all students and families to attend the traditional observance in the familiar school venue.
Telegraph from War Department confirms Platoon Sergeant Harold M. Davis died in action on Okinawa Island May 1. Davis, a Marine Corps member since 1939, is not listed with his station for security. Burial details to follow in a later message.

The 31st annual Polk high school alumni banquet will be held Tuesday evening May 29 in the high school auditorium. Committees include Program chaired by Mrs Hahn and Carl Steelquist. Invitations by Mrs Nelson Whitacre Binford. Decorations by Mrs Green Dahlberg Wilshusen. Initiation by Rodger Gustafson Wehms and Stevens. Refreshments by Mrs Crow Ekdahl McNeely. Tickets are one dollar. a church group will provide supper. Seniors and classes of 1915 1925 1935 will be honored.
Mrs Elmer J Allison hosts Clfford G Hill and son Ronnie from North Platte as they attend the funeral of Clyde Green in Polk. Oscar I Johnson of Omaha visits with brother Ted Johnson and Lt Phil Sailor of Pasadena. Victor Elving Anderson of Stromsburg earns Phi Beta Kappa at University of Minnesota. Mrs Elmer Richters returns from Billings Montana for her father’s illness. Max Thelen of Shelby visits with Mr and Mrs B F Clifford.
Osceola high school hosted the Eighth Grade Commencement Exercises Saturday as Ro Donna Lindholm and Agnes Schinzel were named the two highest averages in Polk County. It marks Polk Schools' third straight year among the top performers.
A union memorial service will be held at the Evangelical Free Church on Sunday May 27 at 3 pm. It honors all who served in the armed forces including the living and heroic dead. The Rev. H. M. Williamson will speak. The American Legion and Auxiliary will be present.
Sundbergs of Polk County, the county's largest hardware store, runs a fair drawing plan under the government re conversion order. Small shipments of radios refrigerators and other essentials will arrive this fall with far more demand than supply. Customers vote by marking chosen items on a printed list and winners will be drawn when items arrive. Stop in or read last week's Progress to cast your vote.
The Polk Municipal Band begins its season with the first practice Monday May 28 at 8 30 pm in the Hotel Building. The opening concert is planned for Wednesday June 6. High school students and community players are invited, with about 45 students eligible and adults joining for a full summer lineup.
Polk businesses announce closure after 10 a.m. on Decoration Day for the holiday. Local shops will suspend operations briefly as residents observe the commemorative day.
A delegation of city officials from four towns met county commissioners to discuss uniform valuations on vacant lots within corporate limits. High valuations deter buyers, so officials consider lowering values to attract taxpaying landowners. County officials agreed to investigate the matter.
Students at Polk schools begin a three month summer vacation after nine months of work. Semester tests were given earlier in the week and an Honor Convocation was held Wednesday morning. Classes dismissed Wednesday afternoon as faculty average final grades and prepare report cards for Friday morning after 10 o'clock.
The annual School Picnic will be held tomorrow at 12 noon in Polk Park. Parents and friends are invited with children and a basket lunch. The Board of Education will serve free coffee cold drinks and ice cream as in prior years. Cash prizes will be awarded for contests in the afternoon.
Swede Home: Art Ekstrom and family join Clarence Johnson for Sunday dinner in Osceola. Bolton families from Stromsburg and Gresham visitors stop by York hospital and Clarks. Mrs. Ekstrom attends Nebraska Lutheran Conference in Waco. District 70 holds picnic at Buckley Park Stromsburg. Miss Anna Marie Fjell stays overnight with the Ekstroms. Mary Alice Ekstrom visits Omaha on business. Hiram Tewell family also visits Frank Bolton home Sunday.
The All American 4 H Pure Seed and Weed Club met at the Earl Watts home May 16 with Glen and Burton Brazee new members. Weed identification, mounts planning, and county fair exhibits were discussed. Ansel Fredrickson's High Prairie club met May 17 at Myron Ostrander's to discuss weed ID and member collections. The 4 H Tractor Club met May 18 in the Extension Office to cover fuels temperatures lubrication and potential tractor demonstrations. New Polk County Dairy Improvement Association members include Harry Brazee Archie Marsden and Charles Walgren. Susies Sewing Circle 4 H met at Joan Eklund’s with seventeen girls. Peggy Throckmorton led a posture demonstration and thimble judging. Jolly Homemakers 4 H, led by Florene Miller, reorganized with Dixie Brummett president Alice Bright vice president Donna Lee Willits secretary Bonnie Merrill news reporter and members Marguerite Brummet Joe Ann Ward Nona Church Mildred John Harriet McCauley.
The Progress apologizes for a misprint naming a son born to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wilshusen. The correct parents are Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wilson of Polk Cafe, with the baby born at David City hospital. The Wilshusen family, now grandparents, accept the mix up with good humor and many congratulatory calls and gifts.
