Summer School Proving Popular at Polk School
About 82 students have enrolled for the Polk school summer session from June 6 through July 15. Enrollment came via mailed forms to parents, with students chosen by teacher evaluation and tests as needing special help. Five teachers run the program: Mrs Wightman, Mrs Jantzen, Mrs Nielsen, Miss Hanquist, and Mr Tranmer. Two bus routes are planned with departures at 7:25 a.m. and 11:20 a.m. Harold Koelling and Gene Wood will drive. Bus stops will be published later.

Den Sealey Qualifies For State Track Meet
Senior Dennis Sealey qualified for the state track meet with a second in the 180 low hurdles at the Hastings District meet on May 12, posting 21.7 seconds to finish behind a 21.2. Den Hanquist faded late in the 880, finishing second in 2:09.9, 2 seconds slower than his season best of 2:07.9 and behind a 2:03.2 winner. Dick Sealey hit 19 feet 6 inches for fifth in the broad jump. Tom Stevens reached the broad jump finals in sixth, and Norm Reckner ran the mile in sixth.

Vladimir F. Nieman longtime Polk Mercantile Co. proprietor died April 18 in Quakertown Pennsylvania. His wife Blanche Cox died years earlier. The Niemans owned property west of Polk village where Gilbert Lamp Shires built a new home, with extensive landscaping. The Polk Mercantile Co. operated in the building now Sundberg Hardware.
