A column argues money may vanish in 50 years as credit cards replace cash. It warns 80 percent of people hold 20 percent of wealth, with the rich growing richer while many die poor. The piece jokes about discarding cash and notes the shift toward plastic as the new wealth yardstick.
Polk High athletes set multiple marks at the Golden Conference meet in St Paul on May 6. Mike Lindburg ran the 120 yd high hurdles in 15.6 seconds the fastest in Class D. Polk’s 2 mile relay clocked 8 56 to break the conference record. Rodney L Heureux Bruce Samuelson Steve Carlstrom and Ken Bills ran the record relay. Tony Warnick won the discus at 131 ft 3 1 2 in. Darwin Neuhaus cleared 11 ft in the pole vault. The Freshman relay team won the 440 relay in 53.5. The state meet moves to Hastings May 23 24 with eight Polk entrants.
Devern Lindholm of the 25th Infantry in Vietnam received the Bronze Star Medal with V device for heroism on March 5, 1969. He stood firm under heavy fire directing fire and evacuating his squad, aiding a major enemy defeat. He later earned the Purple Heart after being wounded on March 16, 1969, his 21st birthday. Lindholm is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Lindholm of Lincoln.
Polk County Wildlife Club and Overland Sand and Gravel pits offer access to fisher men for five dollars per ticket this year only. Tickets available from board members including Robert Houdra Norris Larson Lee Anderson and others. At the Osceola Legion Club meeting on April 18 Don Benda was elected president with Jack Tindall as vice president and Dale Hiemer as secretary treasurer. Mrs Anna Eisler attended funeral services for Donald Weith in Omaha.
The Polk Community Club announces its regular monthly gathering next Monday at 8 00 P M in the Community Hall. A Fourth of July program will be discussed. Coffee committee members are Bud Albin, Bob Holmes and Norris Alfred. Alfreds soda cracker sandwiches with sauerkraut will be served.
The Summer Recreation Program is underway under manager Denny Johnson with Bill LaVelle and Frank Ostrander assisting. Funding hinges on payments for staff and equipment, with initial gifts totaling 230 dollars from American Legion Post 160, Polk Village Board, Polk Woman's Club, and Polk Progress. Much more funding is needed, aiming well over a thousand dollars.
A west Polk residence owned by Mr and Mrs Den nis Johnson suffered extensive fire and smoke damage last Friday morning. Dean Myers arriving home for lunch spotted smoke from a living room window and alerted the Polk Volunteer Fire Department which quickly controlled the blaze. Gas masks aided firefighters as smoke hindered locating the source with a sofa in the living room cited as the likely origin possibly a lamp short.
Spec 4 Edward Johnson of the 31st Infantry in Vietnam earned the Purple Heart for wounds received in action on April 11, 1969 in the Republic of Vietnam. The award was presented on April 12, 1969. Johnson is the son of Mr and Mrs Harlan Johnson of Polk.
Mr and Mrs Gary Harless announce the birth of a daughter named Veronica Renee. She arrived at their home on May 8 after being born on April 30.
HM3 Larry A. Johnson designation in care of the F.P.O. in San Francisco is listed. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Northen of San Diego are guests this week in the Estor Lackey home.
