Polk High School entries at the state Fine Arts Festival received top marks. Sondra Hill earned Superior in dramatic reading The Lords Prayer, while Allen Ziegelbein and Bill McNaught scored Excellent in interpretative oratory and humorous division. The two day event featured keen competition.
The Village of Polk warns residents about improper dumping at communal grounds. It states dumping must be confined to designated holes or banks and threatens locking the gate if careless dumping continues.
Three teachers were hired this past week by the School Board. Walden McNaught 1st grade Mary Lee Campbell 6th grade and Curtis Sederberg football coach Industrial Arts and Biology will join the faculty. Campbell and Sederberg plan summer marriages. Faculty now totals seven with several positions still open.
Mr and Mrs Ollie Johnson and Don Johnson with Demaris and Bradley of Osceola visited Mrs Don Johnson at Aurora hospital where she had surgery last week. In Greeley Colorado Mr and Mrs Wallace Sandell called on Rev and Mrs Long now in Brighton. They visited the George Otte family, former Polk residents. The Citizens State Bank interior shows a spring mood with a green paint job after remodeling the ceiling lowering and grillwork removal.
Mr and Mrs Calmar Johnson announce the birth of Marcene Joan at Stromsburg Hospital on April 29 weighing 8 pounds 12 ounces The announcement notes the newborn girl and hospital of birth in a concise society notice.
The Polk Women’s Club entertained the Senior Class of Polk High School, faculty, their spouses, and Mr and Mrs Henry Werth at Community Hall Tuesday noon. Josephine Strand presided over the business meeting. Jocelyn Stromberg reported on the Lincoln State Convention, with a humorous yet informative account. Marie Uyle, Joan Sweenie, Bertha Brazdy and Stromberg led the program. Mrs Ralph Bristol of Aurora demonstrated cake decorating. Lucille Johnson sang, then refreshments were served. Hostesses were Irma Adelson, Emma Locher and Evelyn Shenk.
Polk Methodist Wo mans Society trip to Blair Omaha featured visits to the Crowell Home and Omaha City Mission. Plans for the 1954 Alumni Banquet set for May 28 at Polk High School with honored classes 1914 1924 1934 1944 1954 and 1929 Silver Anniversary. Tickets 1 50.
Applications for seed certification of wheat oats spring barley rye bromine grass wheat grass vetch sweet clover and first crop alfalfa are due in the Nebraska Crop Improvement Association office in Lincoln by May 20. Application blanks are available in the extension office in the courthouse. Farmers with fields to certify should complete their applications and pay inspection fees this year. Periodic fruit tree spray letters will be mailed to fruit growers by the extension horticulturalist Wayne C Whitney in Lincoln with guidance on spraying different fruit trees and recommended products.
