Polking Around On A 28 Degree Spring Morning

The column recalls a 28 degree dawn at Kahler's Kop as farmers skip planting, a missing lawn mower, and robins locating worms. It notes martins arriving, a full martin house, and a physician’s tale of local birds. A Polk High track squad sent 13 to Kearney with Dan Tyler placing sixth in the 2 mile. Recreation Softball Starts May 5 For City Youth

Recreation director Bill LaVelle unveils a busy summer softball schedule for boys and girls ages 7 through 17. Games begin May 5 with the girls hosting David City at 7 30, and continue Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6 45 for younger players and 8 00 for older. Boys are split into four groups with starts May 9, facing Hamp ton Shelby Henderson Osceola and Genoa among others in Mon and Fri play, while two middle groups pair with eight towns in a Tri County Pony League. A printed schedule is posted in local business houses. The Progress seeks funding, with Dennis Widga assisting after college, and expects reports on contributions next issue. Natalie Hahn, a junior at the University of Nebraska, was initiated into Theta Sigma Phi for journalism scholarship.

Polk Receives Honor Mention for Bloodmobile Support

Polk donors and workers at the Bloodmobile March 24 receive Honorable Mention for support and cooperation. Recognition appears in the Heart to Heart Talk March April edition by the Omaha Regional Red Cross Blood Center.

Nebraska honors convocation recognizes top students

Steven Flodman of Polk was among 851 students at the University of Nebraska honored for high scholarship at the 38th annual Honors Convocation. The event recognized those in the upper ten percent of their class and 127 seniors for superior scholarship, with an address by Prime Minister Jens Otto Krag.

Hospital Reports Week At Annie Jeffrey Memorial

The Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital lists patient dismissals and transfers for the week of April 26 to May. Dismissals include Miss Cecilia Schaal Osceola and several others from Stromsburg Lincoln and Polk. Transfer noted for Dr. C R Peterson Osceola.

Mrs John Smith Dies After Prolonged Illness

Mrs. John Smith died Tuesday morning at Central City Hospital after a lengthy stay of 44 1/2 months. Funeral services will be at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Friday May 6 at 2 00 p.m.

Schedule for last day of school May 20

A special schedule sets Friday May 20 as the last day. Buses depart at 10 30 am. Students go to classes receive report cards 11 15 to 11 30 and a school treat. Rural students depart at 11 30. The annual school picnic is canceled.

A Miscellaneous shower honoring Miss Janice Smith was held at Immanuel Lutheran church parlors on Sunday afternoon May 1. Green and white decorations matched the bride to be and a two course lunch was served by the bride’s aunts after several bridal games and opening of gifts.

American Legion Auxiliary promotes Poppy Day on May 7 in Polk. Members and Junior Auxiliary sell Memorial Poppies to honor war dead. About 20 million poppies are handcrafted annually by disabled veterans nationwide. volunteers assist. Contributions aid living veterans, widows, and fatherless children.

The Polk school reports an excellent response to letters sent to parents about the summer program. To plan supplies and bus routes, letters must be returned by Monday May 9. The six week session runs June 6 to July 15 with classes 8:30 to 11:20 daily.

Polk County Spelling Champ Competes at Midwest Bee

Ann Otte daughter of Mr and Mrs Ted Otte participated in the Midwest Spelling Bee at the Sheraton Fontenelle Omaha on Saturday finishing fourth in the final group. She attended with her mother Mrs Ted Otte and Mrs Walter Nielsen while all contestants were lunch guests of the World Herald.

Faithful Workers Club Meets at Kealiher Home

The Faithful Workers Club gathered Wednesday April 27 at Mrs. Geraldine Kealiher’s home with 8 members and three guests. Mrs. Anita Norquest led in the president’s absence. A shut in for the month was chosen and a committee formed. A May 16 club tour to Minden was planned after a postponement. The annual picnic was set for Polk Park with a covered dish lunch. Slides of the Texas trip were shown by Mrs. Winifred Lackey. A lunch was served by Mrs. Della Hoffman and Mrs. Winnifred Lackey.

Kisler Couple Depart for Fort Devens Assignment

Mr and Mrs Alvin Kisler left Monday for Fort Devens Massachusetts where he will be stationed after a furlough spent with home folks.
