The Ak Sar Ben ninth annual awards honored seven statewide groups for public service. W D Lane praised Nebraska groups and good neighborliness. The Ladies of Immanuel Lutheran Church Polk were cited for tending a neighbor’s ill relative.
The Faithful Workers Club hosted the Polk Woman's Club at Mrs. Ester Lockey's home on Tuesday April 29. Guests Mrs. Harold Cramer and Mrs. Charles Nore heard Mr. and Mrs. Wariatte of South Africa discuss Educational and Missionary work and answer questions. Two visitors attending York College spoke about studying in America to become missionaries, and 35 ladies attended. Refreshments with May Basket motifs followed the meeting led by Mrs. Lawrence Larson, Mrs. Lyle Dornburgh, and Mrs. Emory Cramer. The next gathering on May 28 at Mrs. Cleo Cramer's home will honor mothers and charter members for the club's 30th anniversary.
A Wednesday night meeting with the Commercial Club aims to shape the softball season. Captains from eight teams will discuss manpower losses and potential changes including a four team league, pooling players, and scheduling to one game weekly. The discussion seeks to draft team assignments and secure member participation at the Fire Hall starting at 8 o'clock.
The ninth annual Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Awards honor Rev. Edick A. Anderson of Polk for untiring efforts to improve his community and assist in local projects. The presentation will occur during the year as Ak-Sar-Ben highlights Nebraska’s civic spirit and unselfish acts.
Rev. Earle Eaton claims to hold a record for flood relief work after sixty hours on duty. He spent twenty consecutive hours filling sand bags and followed with seventeen hours more after a brief rest, as Polk residents aided in the soggy saga.
Pam Cramer, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ivan Cramer, sustained two broken fingers on her right hand when a door slammed on them at school on Tuesday.
Mr and Mrs Marvin Fredrick and their son and Janie spent Sunday night and Monday in Omaha enjoying a brief family visit.
The Salvation Army Flood Relief Drive receives donations slowly as readers note donor fatigue. Cash gifts and usable clothing are requested via Sundberg & Son Hardware and the Progress Office, with checks made payable to the Salvation Army.

Mr and Mrs Dennis Jacobsen of Marquette welcomed a son born Tuesday April 29 at Central City hospital weighing 7 pounds 14 ounces Mrs Jacobsen is the former Dorothy Kisler.

May 3rd marks Poppy Day in Polk to honor veterans of World War I World War II and the Korean conflict. Women from the American Legion Auxiliary will pin poppies and collect donations for disabled veterans and children of veterans.
Sheralee Hill, a P. H S. senior, earned a superior rating for a dramatic cut of the play Sod at the University of Nebraska festival. The judge praised her voice and reading. Jeanelle Kroger also earned an excellent placing in poetry reading.
