Sparkin Wins Superior at Polk High Show

The Polk High School Dramatic Club play Sparkin earned Superior at the Holdrege district contest last Friday and received the Trophy. Cast members Laura Johnson Margaret Pitkerel Thais Belle Lackey and Billy Allison were named. Mr. Allison was judged best actor.

Pleasant Hill Mission Circle Meets for April

The Pleasant Hill Mission Circle met with Mrs. Faye Beardsley on a Wednesday afternoon to hear short articles on mission work in India and by the American Sunday School Union. Rev H EB Udd, district superintendent, gave a summary of district activities. A lunch was served. The next circle meeting is set with Mrs. Will Johnson on Thursday April 14 with Mrs Hjalmar Shostrom as hostess.

Corn allotments set for Nebraska corn and depleting crops

Nebraska counties receive a 6 700 000 acre corn quota and a 15 000 000 acre depleting crop allotment for 1938 under the 1938 agricultural adjustment act. Allocations reflect 1928–37 crop data with adjustments for production trends AA and other factors. Polk County totals show 159 120 acres depleting allotment and 92 852 corn allotment.

Record License Plate Submissions Reach New High in 1937

Nebraska vehicle records show 447,900 licenses issued in 1937, surpassing the prior peak of 445,518. Revenue from licenses and registrations totaled 2,186,381, with gains across most vehicle types except passenger cars. Polk County reports 3,813 vehicles and 17,099 dollars in fees for 1937.

Rural power lines to get first tests midweek in Polk county

Dewey J. DeBoer, transmission engineer, says Loup River public power districts will begin line tests midweek and east half farmers start regular service around April 3. Fred Albert reports seepage problem easing as Lake Babcock drops four feet, lowering strain for months. May 1 set to energize 350 miles of rural lines in Polk county district. 14 miles to connect with Loup River district under construction. Julian Ludden named maintenance engineer.

Ambulance Collision Near Osceola Injures Three

An ambulance owned by Mr. Christensen of St Paul Nebraska crashed into a corn truck three miles west of Osceola around 9 Tuesday evening. The ambulance occupants three St Paul men suffered minor cuts and a broken rib but received medical care then continued to St Paul. The truck driver from Arcadia was uninjured. The ambulance was badly damaged.

Nebraskans Own $7.29 Worth of Baby Bonds

Nebraska residents hold $7.29 per capita in government baby bonds, according to a treasury department report. State total reached $10,041,887 as of August 31, with Columbus leading first class post offices in sales, Seward second class, and Osceola Weston third and fourth classes. Lincoln ranks second among first class offices with sales totaling $1,087,043.75 since March 1935.

Moderows Celebrate 20th Wedding Anniversary at Farm

Polk Easter Parade and Egg Hunt Planned for April 16

Polk Commercial Club sponsors a Saturday Easter celebration with a 3 PM egg hunt for children under high school age. Candy eggs will be eaten, while colored eggs contain cash prizes from 1c to 10c. The event promises music, gaiety, and bargains as Polk invites shoppers to spend the day there.

Edith McMurrin Burgess Dies at 86 in Arborville

Edith McMurrin born November 1890 on her parents homestead near Marquette. She married Charles Burgess in December 1914 and lived at the Arborville Burgess Estate. Funeral services were held at 2:30 PM Wednesday from the house with interment in Arborville Cemetery. She leaves husband Charles and a large family including father, daughters, sons and siblings.

Hordville Wins Cup at Trumbull Music Contest

Hordville captured the cup at a Trumbull music contest on Friday with six of nine entries rated superior and three rated excellent. The traveling trophy went to Hordville for the best number performed by the mixed chorus. A large Hordville crowd attended the event.
