A commentary by E. F. Schumacher criticizes overcomplicated modern life from home cooking to highway design. It links appliance overuse to societal confusion, laments speed over safety, and suggests slowing traffic by planting trees mid highways amid debates over jet noise and progress.
Mr and Mrs Louis Naggatt of Edgar announce the engagement of their daughter Patrice Ann to Rick Hoffman son of Mr and Mrs Harold Hoffman of Polk. Patrice is a Sandy Creek High School graduate of 1974 and a Hastings College junior majoring in Elementary and Special Education. Rick is a Polk High School 1975 graduate, attended Hastings College and is employed by Burr Land Leveling. An August 19 wedding is planned.
The Bloodmobile visited Polk on Friday March 4 and collected sixty units of blood. Lauretta Neuhaus received a 2 gallon pin and Leonard Anderson a 1 gallon pin. A list names eleven first time donors and numerous other donors and volunteers assisted with daylong duties and standby coverage.
Polk high school basketball ended with a 73 60 loss to Adams in the opening round of the State Class D finals. Tom Carlstrom led Polk with 26 points as the Cubs struggled from the field and at the free throw line. Coach Mike Fleming praised a strong season and looked to next year.
The Senior Citizens Card Party is set for 2 00 p m at Legion Hall on Tuesday March 22 participants to bring cards and enjoy an afternoon event hosted by local seniors group at the Legion Hall.
The Swede Plain United Methodist Women announce a pancake supper and bake sale on Friday March 18 from 5:00 to 7:30 at Polk Community Hall. A free will offering will be collected.
Polk County hosts a rain or shine event with 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. registration Saturday March 19. Route checkpoints include Sherman Wilshusen Calmer Johnson Darwin Carlson and Kenneth Johnson with lunch at Polk Community Hall and Stromsburg Viking Center. Prizes rely on donations due before Friday and a dance March 25 in Polk High gym where the county king and queen are announced by Cheryl Fisher.
Arnon Dover died Tuesday morning at Central City hospital aged nine. A Polk area lifelong farmer and laborer who helped build Polk after 1906 land sales, he previously lived in York and Lincoln. He loved fiddle playing and repaired fiddles and bows.
The Polk Community Club will meet Monday March 21 at 8 a.m. Main item is a membership drive and fund raising pancake supper. President Dwayne Miller urges every member to attend.
The Polk High School Alumni Banquet will be held Saturday May 28 at 6 30 in the grade school auditorium. The event will be hosted by Polk Methodist Church ladies with committees for decorations program nominating invitation and table arrangements. Honored classes include 1917 1927 1937 1947 1952 1957 1967 and 1977. RSVP Mrs Lowell Bills. Plan to attend.
Clarence Newton 88 of Osceola died Sunday afternoon The funeral is set for Wednesday March 16 at 2 00 p.m. at Arborville Church with burial in Arborville cemetery He formerly lived in Polk and spent years in the Odd Fellows Home York and later the Good Samaritan Home Osceola.
To celebrate the Legion's birthday a pot-luck supper will be held Sunday March 20 at 6 00 p m for all Legionaires Auxiliary members and their families.
The University of Nebraska College of Business Administration announces Leanne Anderson Mrs Kent Anderson is on the Dean's List for high GPA Her placement puts her in the top ten percent of students in the college She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Harvey Sundberg.
Capt and Mrs Douglas Stevens and family from Manhattan Kansas visited Earl and Mrs Stevens over the weekend. Also at the Stevens home were Eldon Johnson Osceola and Dennis Stevens and Laura. Nearby, Mr and Mrs Robert Shostrom attended the Covenant Home celebration for Hans Nielsen and wife marking their 55th anniversary Sunday afternoon.
