First Englishman to Visit Japan Arrived in 1600
The first English visitor to Japan was William Adams who arrived in 1600 and lived in Japan for two decades teaching shipbuilding. Tokyo honors him with a named street and a temple where a June 15 celebration occurs annually. In 1934, Japan erected a memorial to Adams in his hometown Gillingham England.
