January opened with severe cold in the southeast, May frost hit Western portions, June and October were record wet and warm, and September saw 112 degrees along the eastern Kansas border. Representatives from all county areas attended the Polk County Extension Annual Meeting despite bad roads and weather. New three year directors were elected Mrs Ralph Classelbaich Rupert Carlson and Dwight Newcomer. Agronomist Kk Olson urged use of fertilizers like 4 12 0 with emphasis on soil fertility and green manures. Spring programs include a 4 11 Club Leaders luncheon and recognition for 24 leaders who will receive four leaf clovers or plaques. Farmers show interest in septic tank disposal systems and several reservations exist for rental farms. More seed samples and barley as a 1948 crop appear, Velvon 11 from Utah has good performance, and seed stocks are available on request. Bulletins totaling 4500 copies were distributed and a slide set on kitchen planning drew interest at court room and Stromsburg High School. Roads limited attendance but viewers gained useful tips. Rural Youth invites Polk County farm youth 17 to 27 years old.

A warning bulletin from the American Foundation for Animal Health lists seven hazards to guard against in spring seeding and pasture. Dangers include mercury treated seed oats, rat poisons, lead paint, chemical weed killers, arsenic treated bran, hedge sprays with lead arsenate, and roadway oil washed onto fields. If poisoning is suspected, call a veterinarian immediately. misdiagnosis may hide infectious disease.
