The Progress will drop ready-print on March 29 moving to a five column sixteen inch page with eight pages. The change ends a Civil War era practice popularized by Jocelyn of Omaha used by about 700 weekly papers. New equipment is awaited and the next issue will adopt the larger format once delivered.
The sixth annual State Co-op Council Meeting convened at the Yancey Hotel in Grand Island on Wednesday February 27. Polk County delegates Emil Wilshusen Ben Peterson E B Klingsporn and Edick A Anderson attended with Anderson serving as voting delegate. Other Polk guests included Mr and Mrs Orville Hennings Kenneth Olson Stromsburg Mr and Mrs Martin Jones Osceola. The council re elected President Jay A Person and other officers from District 1 and 2, with over 150 registrants statewide. A banquet for more than 200 followed with entertainment by Dick Klassi and remarks by Dr Lyman Walbert on new co op laws and cooperative principles.

The Polk community recalls Z J Myers and family who arrived in 1910 and built an ice pond project that supplied the town. Isaac Fashea served as mayor and supported a new water system while Mrs Myers mentored students and supported the W C T U. The piece reflects on civic life, church service, and the “big house” that sheltered many during high school days.
Polk County taxpayers learn W J Kroger and R Dahlin have been named assistant assessors and will be stationed in the hotel building from March 10 to 15. The oversight in Osceola’s letter is corrected and service will be available locally, easing trips to Stromsburg.

Mrs Myers, living near Sea Pond in Polk, enjoys a long life filled with memories and family. Her health has faded with age but she remains cheerful with companion Miss Ray. She has four children Fern in Gothenburg Alice Burke near Stromsburg Gene in Los Angeles and Dick in Shannon Ireland. A birthday shower is planned for March 13 with cards and well wishes from friends and relatives.
The Polk Community Chorus holds Sunday rehearsal at the Methodist Church at 2 16 asking 35 attendees to balance parts. After a stewardship film, members are urged to use talents for God as a union of voices interprets works by great composers.
Rainbow Rebekah Lodge No 382 convened with 26 members and 1 visitor. Illumination degree was conferred on four candidates Mrs Helen Bay ers Mrs Elizabeth Pierson Mrs Irene Kinberg and Mrs Edo Powell. Ada Dahlgren and Hennie Seymour served lunch as the evening closed. Frank Fossberg’s condition improved since illness.
Polk Woman's Club met at Mrs. Albert Sundberg home. Immunization plan discussed with no date set. A bus trip to Omaha planned for April. Home art program featured Indian handiwork shawls pottery and beadwork. Mrs. Irvin Anderson learned she won a national slogan contest by Pure Pak Company earning a two person air trip and ten day stay at Panama City Panama.
Ralph Upton suffered injuries from a fall down steps at his home last Friday morning. He was hospitalized in Osceola then moved to the Veteran's Hospital in Omaha. He remained unconscious for a time but is now reported doing well with a chin wound and several bruises.
The Polk Legion and Auxiliary raised 165.88 in a heart campaign the highest total yet, forwarding funds to the Heart Society in Omaha linked to the National Heart Association. A breakdown shows personal solicitations 122.86 American Legion 25.00 Plastic Hearts 13.02 Auxiliary 165.88. Also notes Lincoln visitors Ira Lehr family and Lennis Lind with the Stevens.
A weather note recalls light snowfall then heavy drifting early week. Four to five inches fell with subzero temperatures and strong winds, briefly closing highways before roads reopened by Tuesday noon. Farmers welcomed the snow for wheat fields while anticipating warmer winds and spring.
The Countrét Woman's Club entertained at the Richard Widga home on Thursday afternoon with Mesdames Richard Sealey Ilof and Dean Ostberg in charge. Members answered roll call about their invitations to club dress. Mrs pang performed a solo and a skit The Perfect Husband by a group. guests included aviatt Roger Sundberg and Gusta Sundberg.
Pleasant HomeMakers 4-H Club held a Saturday dinner in Sheraleo to mark National 4-H Club Week. Sharon Stevens became president, Marilyn Hahn the secretary, and members discussed Keep Well project and yearbook plans. Marlene Anderson noted the Freedoms Foundation Honor Medal award.
The Polk County Welfare Department reports February figures for Old Age, Blind, and Aid to Dependent Children. Old Age Assistance served 133 people totaling 6813.80 dollars, with county medical support of 155.60. Blind Assistance aided five recipients at 324.80, and 11 families including 29 children received Aid to Dependent Children totaling 112.80. County medical share was 2675. Since 1952 there were no new applicants. four cases were removed for death, intercounty transfer, or family support. Administrative costs for late 1961 were 1887.62, with 129 percent of that charged to county for administration of Emergency Relief. rest from state and federal funds. Emergency Relief funds, raised by a mill levy, support kin of Old Age recipients and other aid, with food accounting for the largest expense. The 1951 breakdown shows total 74460.32 with categories including Food 1991, Clothing 27.89, Shelter 40, Medical 1074.67, Miscellaneous 1326.95. Administrative costs for 1951 were 178.84 to the county, averaging 14.65 monthly.

Polk’s basketball season concluded with a first round loss to Brainard in the Class C tourney at Osceola. Beaver Crossing beat Brainard 50 to 48 in the finals while St Edward beat Leigh for third.
Mrs. Clark Stouffer, 77, died Monday at the Abraham Home in York after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held at Arborville Church Wednesday at 2 P M with Rev Paul Walker and Rev Nels Pearson officiating. Burial followed in Arborville Cemetery.
