The Village of Polk will redeem $9000 of its outstanding bonded indebtedness today leaving a balance of $6000. After refinancing during lean years to secure better rates, debt is now being reduced rapidly, reflecting strong village financial management.
Nearly seventy farmers and businessmen gathered at the high school auditorium for a Dairy Improvement meeting and oyster supper. Osceola county agent J Carder Throdmort on spoke on artificial insemination benefits. Polk Commercial Club sponsored the event, with films shown after the meeting and an oyster supper to close.
First Lieutenant Virgil L. Blase son of Louis Blase Hardville was cited for meritorious achievement while participating in sustained operational missions in the Southwest Pacific He flew B 24 bomber missions over Yap Palau Balikpapan and the Philippines and has flown in Bomber Baron formations since May 28 1944
Prominent Osceola farmer August Jenn received a letter from Lt Edward B Williams written from somewhere in France. Williams said he visited Jenns brother Rev Lucien Jenn at Beschotsheim on January 7 and is well awaiting news from the States. This is their first contact since Germany invaded France. He has two brothers and two sisters in France, all said to be alive and well.
A Polk County report shows a real snowfall of less than two inches despite sensational state papers and radio reports of a 17 inch storm centered near Osceola Stromsburg and Polk. Eastern areas faced closures and paralysis, but Polk County experienced only minor disruption while Sunday’s brief blizzard had little impact.

Leonard Hanceock son of Mr and Mrs G TT Hancock of York and formerly of Polk has been reported missing in action over Italy. He served as head gunner on a B 24 and has been overseas for two years. He was due for a furlough home next month.
Firefighters were called to the Charles Stettner residence on Charles Street in East Polk around mid afternoon Monday to extinguish a roof fire. The blaze caused extensive roof damage before being put out, with chimney sparks suspected as the cause.

Mrs Rolland Swanson and family returned home to Stromsburg after a weekend with her parents the Swansons. Several guests attended birthday and weekend gatherings, with updates on Albert Sundberg, Mrs Everette Cramer and her husband at the Fairmont Army Air Base hospital, and Pete Ehn visiting from Grand Island.
Last week caucus results name four Village Board members A B Sundberg Charles Carlson W Whitacre and Lloyd Kroger. School board nominees listed are Harold Nelson Clarence Bryant Dave BWkdahl and Elwood Sandell.
About 45 members and friends gathered Sunday afternoon in church parlors to honor Rev M H Olson on his birthday. He received a monetary gift from the congregation and a large bouquet from the young people's society, with tasty refreshments served.

Cpl Ralph L Wright born in Polk, nephew of Harry Peterson of Polk and Lawrence Peterson of Clarks, writes from the Philippines about moving fast repairing roads and bridges near the front, heat, mortar fire, and foxholes. He recalls Filipinos aiding the troops, sharing rations, and sending fresh meat, clothes washed in exchange for snow, and a 24 14 inch coconut sent to his step-brother in Cotesfield. He serves with the Engineers Construction Battalion after action in New Guinea.
Edwin Alfred Johnson age 66 of Osceola died from injuries after a pedestrian collision at 2 am on Thirteenth Street and Vinton Avenue. He was struck while walking east about 17 feet from the west curb and knocked 60 feet. He leaves a widow and six daughters.
Mr and Mrs Wm Campain returned home after almost two months in California visiting their daughters in San Pedro and their son in army camps. The popcorn stand at the southwest square was sold to George Steever and moved to a farm north of the city. Dr and Mrs C NR Peterson hosted their wedding anniversary dinner for Mr and Mrs Arnold Isaacson and Mrs M I Daniels of Polk. Willard Cornell returned from Denver with his wife for medical treatment. Mrs Cornell remained, as did Mrs Tom Wright of Brainard to stay with her.
Mrs Clara Blase and Mrs Gilbert Blase visited in the L T Joseph home. Mr and Mrs P J Garten of St Edward visited Polk. Ira Glasser and family stayed with Mildred Snodgrass in Osceola. Baptist Sun day School class hosted a Washington party with games for twelve couples and children. Committee included Mrs Lloyd Lind Mrs Elwood Sandell and Mrs George Otte. Winnie Lind teaches the class. Ebba Hanquist hosted church trustees. Woman's Club to meet March 6 at Mrs Ralph Peterson home. Walter Nelson and son visited Rev Paul Lemke and daughter on Sunday.
