Blood donors aid Red Cross visit at Polk May 26

Forty one volunteers gave blood during the Red Cross Bloodmobil e stop in Polk on May 26. Fourteen donors have since given one to three gallons each, including Sylvia Sandell Dorothy Adelson Ralph Johnson Bernard Grissler Harry Anderson and Arlo Stevens among others. Polk chairman Mrs Paul Strand and auxiliary chair Mrs Dof Ostberg coordinate the effort with Mrs Myron Johnson as county chair.

Rain returns bring moisture to drought strained farms

Farmers faced drought worries as rain fell last week. Official observer Eldon Johnson logged 1.02 inches on June 11, 0.81 on June 13, and 1.41 and 0.35 inches on June 14, totaling 3.59 inches over six and a half days, boosting pastures and crop prospects.

Widow Lillie Widga 83 dies in Osceola

Mrs. Lillie Widga aged 83 died Saturday June 13 in Osceola. Survived by four sons Lyle and Lloyd Polk Lester Stromsburg and Leland Minneapolis. brothers Arthur Donelson Stromsburg and Ernest Donelson Rockford Til. Memorial services held Tuesday at Swede Plain Methodist Church with Rev. Harold Jensen officiating. Burial at Swede Plain Cemetery.

Widga Kisler Nominated in Girls and Boys State

Dennis Widga and Linda Kisler are Polk County delegates at Boys and Girls State at Lincoln. Widga seeks a legislative seat from Belleau Wood. Kisler runs for State Board of Education. Activities include campaigning for gubernatorial candidates, listening to officials, platform work for Nationalist and Federalist parties, and state government exams.

34 Children Enroll First Day Of Reading Program

The Polk Woman's club sponsors the reading program with 34 enrolled on the first day. Children are split into two groups kindergarten through second grade and third through sixth grade. They plan to check out books and meet each Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the hotel lobby.

Jolene Applegate is engaged to Frederic Dornburgh. Jo lene Applegate is a senior nurse at Lincoln General Hospital School of Nursing. Dornburgh is a student at the University of Nebraska. The couple plans marriage on August 16 in Cozad.

Open House Honors The Hillis Sterner 40th Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Hillis Sterner were honored Sunday afternoon at Polk Community Hall for their 40th wedding anniversary. About 100 guests signed the guest book, with remarks by relatives and floral displays arranged by Mrs. Ollie Baker. The open house was organized by their daughters Mrs. Stanley Peterson and Mrs. Roy Glasser Jr., with guests from Columbus Schuyler Omaha and nearby towns.

Mrs Neil Mesner Named Third Grade Teacher

Polk public schools superintendent Kenneth Sand announced that Mrs. Neil Mesner will teach third grade for the 1964 65 term. She holds an AB from Simpson College Indianola Iowa and has two years experience teaching fourth grade at Pershing school Lincoln. Mrs Mesner and her husband Neil with daughter Miriam live on a farm south of town.

Nabity Invited to Space Science Class at Wesleyan

Virgil T Nabity a Polk junior high math and science teacher is invited to participate in a nine month In service Astronomy and Space Science Institute at Nebraska Wesleyan University starting September. The program will meet Saturday mornings and aims to help teachers re evaluate their work amid new curriculum developments. Wesleyan will serve as instructor and the course will cover the solar system solar activity and solar earth relations stars and galactic systems and space physics.
