In a rambling reminiscence from San Francisco a writer recalls childhood encounters with the Slusser brothers Harold and Little Doc. He recounts a 1920s birdshot prank that nearly shot his leg and a later incident borrowing a coaster wagon that lost its bearings, plus reflections on their father Dr Slusser and early printing work.
Attending the funeral in Osceola last Thursday were Dale Johnson of Colorado Springs, Dale’s family from Colorado, Elwyn Johnson and family of Greeley, Terry Johnson of Ft. Collins, Leon Johnson and family of Columbia, Milburn Rydson and family of Britt, Ralph Calvin and family of St. Paul, Wayne Nesselroad and family of Hastings, Ronald Beins and family of Aurora, Derold John of Derby, and others from Polk, Stromsburg, Hardyville and Central City.
The narrator recalls Little Doc as the standout senior in a brass play, notes a family across the street from the Brauer home near a funeral home, and mentions a house that has since been torn down or moved. They reflect on Polk visits since the 1920s and their wish to hear from those who once wandered the streets of their hometown.
