A satirical piece questions a TV pitch claiming five leading ingredients will cure all ills. It notes consumer distrust of television and reports local crime tidbits including varnish theft from a teacher’s car and cemetery decorations, plus a visit from Omaha guests.
Randy Branting placed fourth in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump at the Class D state meet. Tom Carlstrom finished fifth in the shot put. Branting’s 42 feet 11 inches triple jump set a new Polk High School record.
The 911 common emergency number will be placed in service on June 1 1977 in Polk. Residents on the Polk exchange can dial 911 for life threatening emergencies with the Polk County Sheriff Osceola answering and dispatching the appropriate agency. Routine nonemergency calls stay with existing numbers for Fire Rescue Police and Sheriff departments.
Mr and Mrs Kenneth McKillip announce the birth of their son Shawn Ken on April 27 weighing 8 pounds 7 ounces. Grandparents are Maynard Glock Rising City and Robert McKillip Lincoln. Paternal great grandmother is Mrs Willard Lindburg.
A series of weekend visits reported in Polk Market describes Minnesota guests including Mr and Mrs George Swanson and Shirley Hahn visiting Hannah Hahn, with trips to High Prairie Alumni events at York. Local families hosted diverse relatives and friends from Lincoln Aurora Stromsburg Wichita Rockford and Stromsburg for dinners and the alumni gathering.
More than 300 alumni and guests gathered for the Polk High School Alumni Banquet held in the elementary school gym on Saturday night. The United Methodist Women of Polk provided the meal and Kevin Graves served as master of ceremonies. Officers for the past year were President Vicki Reckner Vice President Dick Mundt and Secretary-Treasurer Dee Rehrs.
Rev. Robert Hopkins to take a Methodist Church charge at Bloomfield and Verdigre. He will preach his last Polk sermon on June 12 and move the next week. The Hopkins family has lived in Polk three years and served Marquette and Polk churches. Bloomfield, population 1500, shares a large church membership. Verdigre is about 5 miles away. Polk members regret leaving Polk but celebrate the promotion for Rev. Hopkins.
The National Observer printed a back page feature on Polk in its June 6 1977 issue. Written by Jim Wilson the piece is titled Small Is Big Enough and available at major newsstands and airports.
The United Methodist Church in Polk hosts a Bible School June 6 to 10 from 1 to 4 PM with an open house at 3 PM on Friday June 10. Crafts will be displayed and a short program will be presented.
Rev and Mrs Willis Pauls celebrate their silver anniversary with an open house on Sunday June 5 at 2 30 p m at Polk Evangelical Free Church. Hosts Saundra Pauls Don and Pat Lofquist and David Pauls invite friends and neighbors and request no gifts.
