Progress office cools as detasslers return to heat

The Progress office installs air conditioning to cope with summer heat while detasselers arrive from fieldwork. Raymond Ziegenmeyer helps dust duties, Dad refuses dusting praise, and Dudley Baack finds dusting talent lacking. The popcorn stand handles a busy softball tourney crowd with growing nightly sales and a wary Don Miller covering costs.

Clarks Girls Capture Polk Softball Tournament Title

The Clarks girls softball team defeated David City 15-7 Sunday to win the Polk Tournament final. Earlier games saw Polk’s Marilyn Sorensen win 2- run opener over Columbus, and Columbus lose in semi finals to Clarks. Total crowds grew each night with collections of 17.32, 20.76 and 28.33, while expenses stood around 60. The boys will continue play through July and August, with a Polk 10-11-12 year tournament planned for August.

Hospital Notes on Omaha and Grand Island Patients

Mrs Verland Widga entered Clarkson Hospital in Omaha on Friday. Mrs Levar Sandell is a patient at Litzenberg Memorial Hospital in Central City after a collapse last Thursday. Mrs Martha Westfall of Grand Island is recovering from a fractured hip at St Francis Hospital. Mrs Clara Anderson and Mrs Blanche Fitz are patients at St Francis Hospital in Grand Island. Verland Widga and Mr and Mrs Vern Jones visited Mrs Widga at Clarkson Hospital on Sunday.

Farmers Host African Agriculture Officials in Area

A 15 member group of cooperative officials from seven French speaking African countries will visit Polk York and Hamilton counties on Saturday July 16. The Nebraska Farmers Union in cooperation with Farmers Union International Assistance Corporation sponsors the event to study observe and train on U S agricultural cooperation. Vacations in East with Lytle Family and Friends

Miss Jane Fredrickson spent two weeks in the east visiting Whippany New Jersey and Huntington Long Island with Mr and Mrs Chas A Lytle and family. They joined by Mrs Ollie Johnson and Mrs Leslie Adelson and attended Huntington High School graduation where Suzanne Dryden was valedictorian. Polk High School announces senior band tryouts for the coming year. Reed instruments compete Monday July 25 at 7 30 p m and brass instruments Tuesday July 26, with scales chromatic work and sight reading required. Parents encouraged to attend and uniforms may be exchanged if needed.

Summer School Six Weeks Ends in Polk Schools

The first session of summer school in Polk Schools closed after six weeks of Language Arts Spelling Remedial Reading and Health Safety with Phys Ed. Attendance was excellent overall though the final week saw high absenteeism among older students during detasseling.

Mrs Hills Sterner Named Third Grade Teacher

The school board at its July 5 regular meeting hired Mrs. Hillis Sterner for Polk Elementary's third grade for 1966 67. She has taught in Polk schools and is now attending summer school at the University of Nebraska. The same meeting added Mrs Harvey Lind as Kindergarten supervisor.

Unseasonal Heat and Rain Mark June and July Weather

The record notes extreme heat with a power outage on Monday causing fans and AC to fail. June precipitation totaled 3.32 inches. July began with no rain until July 12 when a downpour dropped 0.32 inch, followed by a cooler evening shower that wetted the ground.
