Ford Scott Shenk born January 25 1880 in Bluff Precinct Hamilton County Nebraska died July 8 1951 at St Francis Hospital Grand Island Nebraska aged 71 5 8 He farmed most his life member of Solar Lodge No 134 Clarks Nebraska married Maude D Halleck September 9 1899 they had five children Zola Margaret Guy Claude Herschel Russel Survived by wife four sons two daughters grandchildren great grandchildren three sisters and many relatives Funeral July 6 1951 at Polk Methodist Church with burial in Polk Cemetery Masonic graveside rites led by Clarks lodge.

Methodists Hold July WSCS Meeting in Phillip Johnson Home

Sunday luncheon hosts Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Lind welcomed guests at the Phillip Johnson residence. The WSCS July meeting featured program leaders Mrs Glenn Hill Mrs R L Peterson and Mrs Mervin Shenk with Mrs Paul W Walker in charge of devotionals. Guest speaker Mrs Martin Jones spoke on the Jews in Palestine as Sheralee and Sondra Hill performed a piano duet. Hostesses were Mesdames Oscar Sundberg T A Stevens Hannah Hahn and Rolland Dahlin.

Don Miller Believed On Way Home From Yokosuka

telegram from Yokosuka Japan reports Don Miller expected to return to the United States aboard the U S Carrier Princeton at month end where he has been stationed. He is due to reach the States the last of this month.

League basketball upset wins shake first round

The Legion and Fred rickson teams pulled upsets over Johnsons Chevrolet and Knothalers as each foe dropped from title contention. The Legion outscored Johnsons 13 to 9 and Swedehomers beat Knothalers 15 to 13. Commercial Club beat Oilers 10 to 2 and can clinch the half title with one win over North Blue or Knotholers after North Blue routed Cornhuskers 17 to 5.

Roger Myers Drowns in Ireland During Boat Trip

Roger Myers 13 son of Mr and Mrs Richard Be of Polk died July 2 near Limerick Ireland after a squall capsized the boat he rode with his mother sister and another couple. The party survived but Roger drowned before help arrived. Funeral services were held in Limerick before burial in Arborville Cemetery Polk.

Polk High Redistricting Meeting Attracts Many

The Polk High Assembly hosted a Monday redistricting meeting chaired by Everett Green of the Polk School Board. Avery Linn outlined state redistricting law while Evan Miller of Benedict described York County plans and potential gains from joining a larger district. District 72 seeks new students as Polk touts its facilities and planned high school shop work.

Bridal Shower Complements Mrs George Jones

Miss Gloria Adelson and Miss Carlyn Strand co hosted a bridal shower Saturday evening at the former’s home in Rock Island Illinois honoring Mrs George Jones formerly Doris Anderson. Guests played games and enjoyed refreshments as gifts were opened, with blue and white colors and spring flowers in decor. Mrs Anderson wed Mr Jones on June 24 in Rock Island Illinois.

Danny Wurtz Suffers Fractured Elbow in Fall

Danny Wurtz son of Mr and Mrs Leo Wurtz sustained a fractured elbow Tuesday July 3 in a fall. He was taken to Bryan Memorial Hospital Lincoln where surgery was performed Tuesday evening. Danny and his mother returned home Friday.

Arborville Church to Observe 75th Anniversary

Arborville Congregational Church marks its 75th founding anniversary with two services on Sunday July 22. Rev Arthur W Taylor and Rev J Chris Nyrop lead the morning and afternoon sessions with special music by local choruses and a re dedication at the Town Hall. A noon basket dinner will be served. The church was founded in 1876 by Rev C S Harrison a pioneer missionary and nursery man who aided York County projects.

Midgets Win Twice In A Week For Polk Team

The Polk Midgets earned two victories last week. They beat Stromsburg 7 to 6 in a league game and defeated Central City 9 to 7 in a non league contest. Kenny Bowers pitched all nine innings against Burg. Louis Light hit two triples against Central City. Don Widga and Ery Paben shared pitching duties.

Miss LaMarr Stuhr and Duane Newton wed at Zion's Lutheran Church Tampton on June 30 in a ceremony attended by 175 guests. Rev Long presided as bridesmaids and ushers joined the couple for a reception with a four tier cake and floral decor. The couple plans a short wedding trip with Mrs Newton in a salmon suit and stephanous corsage.

Anderson Family Picnic At Buckley Park On 4th July

The Anderson family and relatives gathered at Buckley Park for a July 4 picnic. Attendees included George Anderson and multiple Anderson branches, Johnsons of Rockford Illinois, Prochaska of Toledo, Tracys, Widgas of Lincoln and York, Daniels of Silver Creek, and others from Polk. A four generation photo was taken and Lester Upton and family of Indianapolis visited Polk relatives and Wayne Upton received care at Lincoln Veterans Hospital amid plans to settle on a Polk farm.
