Girls Asked to Join Polk County Fair Singing Group

As part of Polk's Bicentennial Day program a girls chorus will sing with two guitarists Shirley Wagner and Wendy Redman. Grade school girls from 1st through 8th grade are urged by organizer Janice Saylor to meet at Polk Community Hall on Monday July 14 at 7 30 for a practice.

Polk Girls Champion District Tournament

The Polk girls softball team, 15 years old, won the district tournament at Waco in four straight games securing a place in the state tournament at Grand Island. Wins included 8-7 over York Angels, 17-15 over Hampton, 20-19 over York Saints, and 20-11 over Waco. Coached by JoAnn Stevens and featuring players Janice Schulze, Jeanelle Carlson, Terri Harrington, Abbi Harrington, Marla Fowler, Sheila Flodman, Heidi Harrington, Roxanne Werner, Denise Schulze, Peg Lindburg, Darlene Hopkins, Lori Hanquist, Jan Lindburg, Leslie Jones, Michelle Sandell, Lynelle Meerkatz, Monica Werner.

Summer Rec Fund Adds Donations From Legion Post 160

The American Legion Post 160 adds 100 dollars to the Summer Recreation Fund and 100 dollars to the Swim Fund. Dennis Carlstrom donates 25 dollars to the recreation fund. The Swim Bus Fund reaches 150 dollars. Summer Recreation Fund donations total 485 dollars.

Polk Cub Scouts enjoyed a Saturday afternoon swimming party at Buckley Park in Stromsburg. Lunch was served by their mothers.

Trinity Lutheran LCW Meets in July Parlor Session

The Trinity Lutheran Church Ladies Aid met on Wednesday evening July 2 with president Bonnie Wolfe presiding. They plan to sponsor the Senior Citizens Bingo on August 6. Bertha Braz da and Fern Myers led a skit This Land is Your Land. The group sang America the Beautiful For the Beauty of the Earth and America. Fifteen members were present and were served refreshments by Darlene Swanson Florence Hoffman and Jeanine Hoffman. Joyce Baack, correspondent.

Polk County Fair marks century and nation’s bicentennial

The Polk County Fair will celebrate its 100th anniversary alongside the U.S. Bicentennial from June 13 to 17 at the Osceola fairgrounds. Moore’s Greater Shows visits the midway starting Sunday July 13, with Bicentennial ceremonies, quilt and art displays, garden clubs, early day exhibits, a parade, and a youth bicycle rodeo. The old 4H building houses the Bicentennial Building and quilt show. organizers invite quilt entrants and exhibit participants, with contact details for Mrs Dorothy Jones and Mrs Eldena Lindblade.

Engagement Announced for Bonie Amato and Jay Shaw

Mr and Mrs J P Amato of Ft Lupton Colorado announce the engagement of their daughter Bonie to Jay Shaw son of Mrs Ray Stevens of Denver and the late Wendell Shaw. Bonie is a Colorado State University social welfare graduate now with Launer County Dept of Social Service. Jay is a Polk High School graduate with three years in the US Army including one year in Vietnam and works at Home Light and Power in Greeley. The couple plan a September wedding.

Reading Program At Local Library Enrolls Thirty

The Children's Library Reading Program closed with a small incentive for attendees of two or more sessions. A story hour engaged the children and books were checked out. Thirty children enrolled, totaling 151 books borrowed. Sponsored by the Polk Women's Club with Virginia Hopkins leading as chair and Mary Stevens as assistant.
