Citizens State Bank Stockholders Meet Elects Officers

The annual meeting on Monday January 24 reconfirmed M E Isaacson as President Oscar Strand as Vice President A Isaacson as Cashier and John A Anderson Andy L Carlson and Chas A Carlson as Directors Florence Anderson was elected Assistant Cashier Warren Strand resigned as book keeper effective February 15 but the board did not fill the vacancy. Surplus increased by 1250 to 5000 and directors praised Cashier Isaacson for his service.

Taps sounded for veteran of Civil War

George Fisher, centenarian Civil War veteran and longtime resident, died at his daughter’s home in Aurora Tuesday at 11 30 AM aged 100. Survived by four sons Walter Thomas A M Fisher and Rev C F Fisher two daughters Mrs Pitchall and Mrs Swanson. Mineral services Thursday at Arborville Congregational Church with Rev Paul Porter. Burial Arborville cemetery.

Farmers Oil Co holds annual meeting in Polk County

The Farmers Union Co-Operative Gas Oil and Produce Association of Polk County Nebraska held its annual meeting in Stromsburg with over 200 attending. President H A Jones outlined board reports while C T Moline presented the auditor and manager notes. New director Carl Sundberg was elected for five years, and patronage refunds led to a net saving of 10 439 48 with 589 507 gallons of fuel oil sold in 1937.

Polk Cagers Win Two Fast Games

The Polk grade basketball team defeated St. Ursula of York 25 to 12 on Friday January 1. Sundberg led Polk with 8 points followed by Alfred with 7. Newton Davis Willits Peneelly and others saw playing time as Polk pulled ahead in the closing moments. Samson starred for St. Ursula.

The Polk quintet overwhelmed Clarks with swift ball movement and a strong defense to win 43 12. The second team lost 14 12 after two extra periods. On January 28 Polk travels to Stromsburg for a revenge game.

Birthday Celebration Honors Mrs Shostrom At Home

On Sunday the children of Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Shostrom gathered at the parental home to honor Mrs. Shostrom on her birthday anniversary. Funeral services mark end of Stromsburg resident

Funeral services for Mrs Sophia Anna Johnson longtime Stromsburg resident were held at Edwin L Anderson Funeral Home with Rev Alfred Trued in charge. She would have turned 93 on February 6 had she lived. she died after a heart attack at home late Saturday. Survivors include three daughters Tillie Johnson Stromsburg Amanda Miller Marquette and Jennie Sealey Ashton Idaho. Burial followed in Stromsburg Cemetery. Daniel A Jordan 69 died Sunday at his son Albert Jordan’s Stromsburg home after weeks of illness. He moved from Albion nine months ago and burial rites were held in Albion. He leaves two more children.

Telephone 09 Responds to Emergency in Weeping Water Fire

A January 22 blaze in Weeping Water destroyed the Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph central office. Emergency switches loaded from Lincoln restored toll service by 5 a.m. with temporary quarters at the city hall and crews wiring cables.

Arborville celebrates sixtieth wedding anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. F. N. Recknor of York marked 60 years of marriage with a family dinner at Arborville on January 24. Married in Uniontown in 1878 they moved to Nebraska in 1879, retired to York in 1914, and raised two children. The couple's kin and neighbors attended as well as well wishes from The Progress.

Gustafson New Director for Farmers Grain Co

At the annual meeting of the Farmers Co-Op Grain Assn held at City Hall last Wednesday Rudolph Gustafson was elected director to succeed E W Widga who completed a five year term. Seventy five stockholders attended a midday luncheon. The secretary and manager reported a solid year despite tough elevator conditions with 200000 bushels of grain and a $3500 net profit. An 8 percent dividend on capital stock and a one cent per bushel patronage dividend were declared.

Hills Rendering Plant Begins Operations

The Rendering Plant near Polk, built by Glenn Hill one mile west, started operations last week. Hill and his father run a local cream station and have long hauled dead stock to distant plants. The new modern facility promises a prosperous future, adding needed industry to Polk and Polk County.

Gladys McCoy Wins Prize in Radio Contest

Miss Gladys McCoy a Polk County resident and Lincoln business college student won five dollars in a Royal Typewriter Co sponsored radio contest on KFOR Sunday January 16 She among six contestants typed a three minute paragraph choosing the easiest subject Radio Programs The winner advances to a final contest by listener votes Gladys is daughter of Mr and Mrs C J McCoy of the city.

Swede Home Friends Attend Farewell and Visits

Mr and Mrs Joe Monson motored to Iowa on business returning Thursday. A farewell party for Mr and Mrs Oscar Person was held at their home Friday evening with numerous neighbors and relatives attending. Sunday visits included Carol Flodman and Stromsburg friends plus plans for church meetings at Genoa and January 31 yearly business session.
