Dick Harless Heads Polk Commercial Club for 1966

Dick Harless, operator of Dick's Standard Service, was elected president of the Polk Commercial Club for 1966. Glen Leverington, cashier at Citizens State Bank, was chosen Secretary-Treasurer. A coin flip gave Lyle Dornburgh the vice presidency, but he declined, forcing Norris Alfred into the role amid protests. Seventeen members attended the steak dinner at the Corner Cafe before the meeting.

Polk High Mixed Octette and five baritone soloists performed at the Albion Choral Clinic in Albion. Dennis Sealey highlighted the Polk group among 850 students from 23 schools across a two day program conducted by Harold Stark of the University of Iowa.

Meeting to Protest Predator Poisoning in Grand Island

Former Resident Wallace Englund Dies in California

Wallace Englund, 55, a Tracy California U. S. vocational agriculture teacher and former Polk resident, died December 22 at his Tracy home. He lectured at Tracy High School since 1941 after earning degrees from University of Nebraska California Polytechnic and University of the Pacific. He is survived by his wife Arline, daughter Luann, son Randy, a sister Dorothy Wells and three brothers Arthur Ralph Russell.

Clarks Bombers Beat Cubs 72 70 In Close Battle

Clarks Bombers edged Polk Cubs 72 to 70 as Clarks controlled pace with balanced scoring led by Matt Shensey 26 and Dennis Van Pelt 16. Don Sealey matched 26 for the Cubs, with Wayne Heiden 16 and Don Hanquist 11. Polk reserves won 42-34. The Cubs travel to Palmer for Goldenrod Conference tournament opener Wednesday 8:30.

Charles Ekdahl died in Kansas City on January 2. Interment was January 5 at Kansas City. He was a brother of Dave Ekdahl of Polk and Mrs. Lloyd Hanquist of Hordville.

Robert Nelson was taken to St Francis hospital at Grand Island on Monday. Mrs. Victor Johnson is a patient in the Osceola hospital.

Trip to Florida for fertilizer plant tour winners

Mr. and Mrs. Dean Myers and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hill of Benedict left Saturday noon by jet from Omaha for a three day tour of a Coop fertilizer phosphate plant in St. Petersburg Florida. Dean Myers and Ray Hill earned the trip by selling fertilizer in 1965. The couples returned Tuesday.

Polk School Board Rehires Walter Nielsen for 1966-67

At the Polk School Board meeting on January 3, Superintendent Walter Nielsen was rehired for the 1966-67 term. Nielsen arrived in Polk three years ago as principal and guidance director, later becoming superintendent for the last two years.

Rebekahs Install Myrtle Bush As Noble Grand

Myrtle Bush was installed as Noble Grand Thursday evening at Rainbow Rebekah Lodge. The installation was by a Central City degree staff. Eleanor Hatfield, Della Hoffman, and Laura Merchant were elected to Vice Grand, Secretary, and Treasurer respectively. Out-going Noble Grand Josephine Strand received a pin from Helen Bayer. New year appointive officers were seated and committees named. A pot luck lunch followed for about forty attendees.

Union Pacific seeks to drop LCL shipping in Nebraska

The Union Pacific Railroad Co seeks authority to discontinue less-than-carload pickup and curtail LCL service in Nebraska. A public hearing is scheduled before the Nebraska State Railway Commission on February 15 at 9 30 a.m. in Lincoln at 134 South 12th Street.
