Scout Troop Organized Under Leader Jerry Stevens
A Boy Scout Troop, led by Jerry Stevens, held its first official meeting on Monday January 4 with 16 boys eager to learn scouting. They meet every Monday at 7 30 in the Community Hall and 15 members passed candidate seams and are now registered as scouts with two teens aged 14 eligible to be Explorer Scouts. all registered scouts work on tenderfoot requirements.

Benedict sweeps Polk on Friday night dominating volleyball, reserve, and varsity basketball. Benedict's girls volleyball routed Polk rookies. in basketball Benedict beat Polk 48 to 41 as Polk led at halftime but faded in the second half. Hampton beat Polk 77 to 48 as Polk struggled against quick passes and a strong Hampton five. Skaden led reserves 33 to 23.

Legion Auxiliary To Sponsor Essay Contest
January meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary at the Legion Hall included 23 members. A report on the Bloodmobile was given by Margaret Jones. The Americanism essay contest for 7th and 8th graders and for juniors and seniors will be sponsored again. A $10 donation was made to the Polio Fund. Members plan to knit sweaters for Korean War orphans and a committee will select a Girl State candidate. A Valentine Party and carpet rag sewing event are scheduled with a pot luck lunch.

Darwin Newton Crowned Shotput Champ in Japan Track Meet
Cpl. Darwin R. Newton of the US General Hospital 8079th Army Unit won first in shot put at Tokyo events and the All Japan Army Meet in Sasebo. He also led the All Japan Army Track Team to victory in the International Meet, posting 48 ft 8 in in shot put and 138 ft 6 in in discus. A Polk High School graduate and York College alumnus, he is the son of Mrs. Ernest Lott of Polk.

Rev Long Accepts Call To Brighton Colorado Charge
Rev C W Long, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran in Polk for seven years, announced at the annual meeting that he accepted a call from the Lutheran church in Brighton Colorado. The Longs came to Polk in 1947 from North Carolina and will leave at month's end. He marked 25 years as an ordained minister and their 25th wedding anniversary this fall with children Eleanor Roger and Charles. They will be missed by the congregation and community after moving to Colorado.
