Five-Grass Mixture Boosts Indiana Hay and Pasture Quality
Indiana farmers in 12 counties praise a five grass mixture of timothy chrome red clover Ladino clover and alfalfa for higher hay yields and better pasture. With proper nitrogen phosphate and potash fertilization and annual top-dressing this mix has produced up to three tons per acre on first cuttings. Norman Thompson reports 27 cattle 16 milk cows 11 calves plus 100 pigs and 16 sows on a five acre plot for five weeks. The mix also improves soil by deep legume tap roots and added organic matter increasing water-holding capacity and fertilizer efficiency.

Grand Champion Toby Leads 52nd International Livestock Show
At the International Livestock Show grand champion title went to Grand Champion Jews State College for a 1,240 pound Aberdeen Angus steer named Toby. Toby becomes the first and only steer to win the grand championship after previously earning reserve in 1950. The presentation featured Chief Judge A D Weber, W W Prince, Jess Cc Andrews, and George Edwards with Iowa State College.

Ohio State University farm experts report that soil type determines whether plowing occurs in fall or spring. Over a 14 year test period spring plowing benefits light soils, while fall plowing reduces soil compaction by spring. On heavier soils late fall plowing provides equal or better granulation than spring plowing.
