A March wedding is planned by Melody Albin and Mickey L Hoff man of Polk. Engagement announced by Mr and Mrs Lloyd Albin and Mr and Mrs Darold Hoffman of Polk. Miss Albin is a 1974 Polk High School graduate and a bookkeeper at Citizens State Bank Polk. The groom is a 1971 Polk graduate and works in farming near Polk.
Bus routes switch on January 20 reversing the schedule after the first semester ends January 17. The change affects pickup and drop off times for students and staff across district lines.
About 45 years after girls basketball faded in Polk the sport returns with a home game against York High. Reserve at 6:30 p.m. and varsity at 8:00 p.m. Named on Polk varsity are Carlson Flodman Harrington Lindburg Werner Harrington and Flodman. Reserves include Hanquist Harrington Neeman Flodman Jones Lindburg Sterns. Managers are Albin and Harrington. Coach Cotter expects a winning season under boys rules. A fan predicts Polk 24 York 28.
A church social is scheduled at the United Methodist Church on Sunday January 12 at 7 00 p m. Community members are invited to attend the gathering for fellowship and refreshments.
Polk county families hosted and visited over New Year weekend and Sunday gatherings. Ken Wilshusen and family joined Murray Nelson for oyster stew on New Years night. Ethel Nelson and Dale Weinrick with Alda ties attended a luncheon with Murray Nelson. Clarence Guthrie and Clem Prososki families returned from California. Ed Dobberstein visited his mother Anna Ray for Sunday dinner. Ronald Miller and family from Clarks visited Paul Anderson on Sunday afternoon.
John Niebuhr, 76, died Sunday January 5 at Syracuse Community Hospital after a month long illness. Services were held Wednesday January 8 in Syracuse with interment in Syracuse Cemetery. Survived by wife Adele a daughter Ardis Wilhelms and five grandchildren. Niebuhr known in Polk community from the Wilhelms Polk Progress era.
Esther Ruby Stohl 82 died January 1 at Bryan Memorial Hospital Lincoln after failing health. She was born January 25 1892 in Minneapolis daughter of Reverend John and Hannah Lind Gabrielson and taught in Nebraska schools after graduating Stromsburg High School 1911 and Wayne State College. She married Arthur Gustafson in 1918 and later Gunnard Stohl in 1961 living in Polk and Lincoln. Survivors are husband Gunnard two sons Paul and John six grandchildren. services January 3 at Polk United Methodist Church with Rev John Ekwall. interment Swede Plain Cemetery near Polk.
The Polk Memoirs book, issued recently, is moving quickly with only about 50 copies left from a 500 order. No reorder planned. Send $6.00 plus 35 cents postage to Alvena Lind at Polk to secure a copy. The volume covers area history, churches, schools, organizations, humor, pathos, and sketches by former residents.
Mr and Mrs Leslie Adelson spent New Year’s Eve overnight with Mr and Mrs Arthur Pinneo in York. Mr and Mrs Stanford Ang were Friday evening visitors in the Ol lie Johnson home.
The Cubs won their opener 61-29 over Hardville then lost 59-56 in overtime to Hampton Hawks in the Hampton Invitational. Dana Anderson and Roger Carlstrom each scored 17 for Polk High. Tom Carlstrom added 12 and Duane Bodine 6. Hardville beat Trumbull 51-41 for third.
At the January 2 UMW gathering in the Methodist Church parlors, Mrs Ed Saylor led the business. Miss Mary Lou Sandell and Mrs Saylor provided solos. prayers followed devotionals. A report showed six ladies read 334 books last year and were honored with corsages for missions. Forty-five members participated in the reading program. lunch closed the meeting with program leaders listed.
Mr and Mrs Walter J Nelson visited Mrs Ellen Spires in Kearney on Sunday. They were in Grand Island Monday to meet Mr and Mrs George Burke of Central City who flew home from Ft Bragg California. The Burke family spent holidays with Leon Vanderheiden and girls. All were supper guests of Mrs Clara Johnson in Grand Island. Reuben Ehn and family visited Hutchinson Minnesota over Christmas. Ted Pfiefer and family of Lincoln and Darrel Scherer and family of Gibbon Minnesota attended a belated Christmas party at M O Johnson and Duane's home on New Years. Pam Harless returned to Midland College after holidays with her parents. Martin Hoffman Sister Lackey and Floyd Miller dined with the Miller family on New Years. Dick Mundt and Charles visited Marvin Bankson and family Saturday. Norma Budnick and families visited Mrs Carl Mundt Friday.
