Arthur Hultquist, 46, a Stromsburg grocer, died Tuesday afternoon from gunshot wounds in a personal safety related incident. Local authorities reported the death as self-inflicted with no foul play suspected.
Following November elections four offices in the Polk County courthouse start new terms today and a 1943 law raises pay for all noncommissioner officers. The roster lists Clerk of District Court I. D. Huston 56, County Attorney Philip Nyberg 1200, Superintendent Olive McBeth at least 1900, County Judge L. M. Merrick 2050, Sheriff Gunnard Peterson 1600, Clerk John J. Anderson 2300, Deputy Clerk Laura Olseen 2300, Deputy Treasurer Dorothy Boden 1500, and Commissioners Louis Daum Arthur S. Nelson Ell W. Johnson at 1500.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at the Funeral Chapel in Sweet Home for John Erick Carlson who died suddenly of a heart attack at his home. Born October 24 1867 in Sweden he came to the U S at 18 settling in Illinois and later Illinois Nebraska and finally Polk County before moving to Sweet Home in 1936. Survivors include his wife Rose and four children Mabel Wosup Ocheyedan Iowa Roy Carlson York Neb Rus sel preceded him in death. sisters Hilda Wallon El Monte Bethel Johnson Spencer Anna Strom Deepwater and a brother Fred Carlson in Sweden. eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Stromsburg residents report visits and moves. Paul Johnson family and Nancy Lee of North Platte stayed with grandmother Mrs. A. B. Lind. Mrs Braithwaite of Osceola started work at the Koffee Kup. Loyal Knerr family and Mrs Atkinson visited Omaha and relatives Leonard and Mrs Thompson. Ruth Shustrum studied in Omaha last week. Warren Curry and Douglas moved to Lincoln for University duties. Mrs Curry and baby stayed with her parents until a new home is found. L O Graves and Mog er returned from Hollywood trip. Louis Ericson returned to Omaha for school after holidays. Chas Olson returned from Kansas City and Osage. H R Anderson family spent holidays in Houston with Clayton Rystrom. Rodney and Wayden left for Lincoln to resume Uni duties. Clara Anderson left for St. Cloud after holidays, with stopovers in Minneapolis to visit sister Jeanette Widen.
Miss Gloria Ann Peterson resumed her studies at Wahoo on Sunday after a period away from school work.
Polk County endured one of the coldest periods in years with temperatures sinking below zero and mornings at 14 to 15 below. By midweek a warmup brought above freezing highs and most snow melted as conditions moderated after a weekend.
Miss Julia Ann Smith and William W Collett wed at Emmanuel Lutheran Church on December 29 at 3 30 pm in a Christmas themed ceremony. Rev A C Warneke officiated with music by John Stohs and soloist Alvin Smith. The couple will farm northwest of Bradshaw and will reside on the bride's family farm. Out of town guests included Mr and Mrs Ernie Stuhr and J Deuker family.
Susan Matura Bull Vaughn born September 20 1864 in Meaford Ontario died December 27 1946 at age 82 in Fullerton. She immigrated to Iowa as a child and later lived near Shelby Osceola then farmed near Fullerton for forty years. Survived by nine children thirty grandchildren one great grandchild and a sister. Funeral services were held December 30 at the Fullerton Methodist Church with burial in Shelby cemetery.
The Grain Seed and Corn Show will occur with the Cornhusker Caravan Exhibition on January 27. Ten prize classes include 10 ears yellow and white corn, wheat, oats, soybeans, rye, and one gallon of several forage crops. Entries accepted January 20 25 at the Extension Office and until 10 o clock January 27. Lawrence Meacham and Lavelle Lamoree chair the committee.

The Greens Chapel Jolly Workers Club meeting is postponed to January 24. A church night supper is set for January 16 at 7:00 PM with Dr. Hunter present for the quarterly conference. Elders Geo B Carr and Samuel Christensen of Ogden Utah on a mission visited family and helped bless and name Chevy Rae Burke on Christmas afternoon.
A report lists 176 Polk County men still in the armed forces as part of Nebraska's total 29,134. The USO will continue spiritual morale and welfare work for a year, funded by the Polk County drive aiming to raise the county’s state share of 80 dollars. Local solicitors named include Mrs. Wallace Scott, Mrs. C Marvin Fredrickson, Mrs. Clyde E Smith, Harold Taddiken, O R Hennings, Gus Tenniges, Rudy Sandin, and Alfred Grossnicklaus.
Osceola activities include obsequies for Mrs Charles Rosland last Friday at a Lincoln hospital after a heart attack. Community notes report bridge club high score, New Year guests, teaching duties resumed, campus moves, hospital care, and local social visits.
Polk High School displays a January athletic and music schedule with games at Shelby Benedict Osceola Burg Clarks Albion Music Clinic and a music program. Miss Graham was absent nursing her mother. Mrs Mildred Anderson teaches her classes. The gym floor back boards and new fans were installed and the building halls waxed and sealed at Christmas.
Ortha Val Jean Watts was among 41 candidates for certificates from Creighton Memorial St Joseph’s and St Catherine’s Hospital Units of Creighton University. Graduation exercises Sunday January 5 at 3:00 PM in the university auditorium featured address by John Philip Cogley.
The Chevrolet coach belonging to Edward Lisko was completely destroyed by fire Thursday night. New Years visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Bernt with Mr. and Mrs. Chet Wells in Columbus. John Micek visited with Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Bernt near St Andrews. Leo Lassek and daughter visited near Monroe with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Zelasny. Lisko party also traveled to Omaha to stay with V J Rakowski and family and called on Frank Lassek and family.
Second Lieutenant Rudolph C. Nitsch, son of Mr and Mrs Rudolph Nitsch of the Island community in Polk County, graduated December 20 from Officer Candidate School. He studied administration supply military law military courtesy ceremonies methods of instruction drills voice and command. Before OCS at Camp Lee he was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds and spent six months on Okinawa.
Mr and Mrs Donald Heinemeyer returned to Ohio after holidays at the George Heinemeyer home. Mr and Mrs Cecil Larson and their son from Grand Island were dinner guests at the C O Carlson home. Mr and Mrs Jerome Hemmer and son were guests at the Joe Munson home. Ronald Carlson spent Friday night with Wayne Craig of Clarks. Mien and Annetta Karges stayed overnight with Mrs Raymond Terry.
