Cubs Lose Twice At Bradshaw Tourney

Benedict edged Polk 52 50 in the Bradshaw Holiday Tournament first round. Lindburg 17 Foote 13 led Polk while Benedict pulled away after halftime. Hampton defeated Polk 178 69 in the other first round. In consolation Polk fell 60 51 to Hampton Hawks. Albin 14 Foote 11 for Polk. Bradshaw beat Benedict 54 48 for the title. Polk hosts Benedict Friday and Shelby visits Saturday.

Bedient Kidney Fund Opens With 280 In Week One

A charity drive for Warren Bedient, 27, of Polk, raised 280 dollars in seven days toward his kidney transplant. Bedient has suffered kidney failure, is married with a daughter, and his wife teaches in the McCook school system. Several local residents and anonymous donors contributed amounts ranging from five to sixty dollars.

Arborville Church Holds Annual Business Meeting

The Arborville Congregational Church held its annual business meeting in the parsonage on Sunday afternoon January 4. Lindley Cook served as moderator and Mrs. John Wochner as secretary. The group voted to sponsor a fund for Warren Bedient with Mrs. Ed Hanson in charge. Donors should make checks payable to the Warren Bedient Fund to Mrs. Ed Hanson in Polk Nebraska.

Blanche Fitz and Anna Kisler joined Lydia Peterson for New Year celebrations. Jolly Westside Birthday Club met at Viola Babcock’s home January 5 to honor Viola, Ella Cramer, and Helen Samuels with Kings Corners games. Ella Cramer won high prize. J Ostberg low. Don Hangust and wife visited Ellen Spires at Metho Hospital in Omaha on Sunday.

Elmer Anderson 76 longtime Polk County resident died January 3 1970 his death linked to a car in the garage He was born May 29 1893 in Randolph Kansas served in World War I worked as a cement mason and was a member of Swede Plain United Methodist Church He married Selma Naslund in 1925 and Mary Gustafson in 1949 He leaves a son Eugene and a daughter Doris plus relatives and stepchildren Services were held January 6 1970 at Swede Plain United Methodist Church with Rev Deryl Reed officiating.

Van Housen announce birth of Paul Dennis in York hospital

Mr and Mrs Dennis Van Housen welcomed a son born Saturday January 3 at York hospital. The infant weighed 9 pounds 12 ounces and was named Paul Dennis. Marlin Adelson of St Paul was a guest of Mrs Julia Flodman Friday afternoon.

Defensive Drivers Course Offered to Polk County Students

Polk County high school students are invited to join a Defensive Drivers Course sponsored by the Polk County Women’s safety organization. Four two hour sessions will run on Wednesday evenings in February at the Polk County Courthouse from 7:30 to 9:30 with Trooper Vern L. Scharff of Grand Island leading. A $4 registration fee covers films.
