The Polk school board hosts informational sessions with surrounding districts about consolidating with District 72. So far districts 66 81 and 46 have met with more sessions planned including districts 65 44 and 48. Only district 48 in York County is set for February 26.
The Dramatics Department holds its local elimination contest February 25 at 8 PM in the high school auditorium. Students slated include Sondra Hill, Dale Peterson, Allen Ziegelbein, Annetta Leamons, Kenneth Bowers, Jack Larkin, and others with a newscasting division to be announced. Free will offering requested to help defray expenses.
Gust Monson longtime Polk County resident dies after a three year bed confinement. He passed away early Wednesday morning at age 63. Funeral arrangements were not yet finalized as the press deadline approached.
Polk clinched two dramatic wins over Shelby at the Polk gym with four seconds left in each game. Louis Light sealed the second victory for the second team, while Gaylen Holmes hit the late jumper to win the first team contest. Ron Nyberg led Polk scoring in the first half as Polk closed the season on a high note.
Miss Margaret Knabe of Nehawka became the bride of Don Staples a Polk music teacher Sunday February 17 at the Methodist church in Nehawka. They returned to Polk Monday to resume his teaching duties in the Polk schools. They reside with Mrs Mary Blase. Attending from Polk were Mrs Mary Blase Mr and Mrs Fred Laessle and Mr and Mrs Henry Blase.

Charles H Doremus born September 23 1866 near Milwaukee Wisconsin. He moved to Polk County at age two and farmed there his whole life. Survived by son Clifford in Chicago daughter Della in Cheyenne sixte en grandchildren great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Funeral at Anderson Funeral Home Stromsburg with Rev Paul W Walker officiating. Burial in Pleasant Home Cemetery.
Polk finishes the season and heads to Osceola for the District C Basketball Tournament from February 26 to 29. Top teams Leigh Brainard Stromsburg Beaver Crossing and St Edward are seeded, with Brainard and Beaver Crossing ranked 1 and 2. Polk has a first round bye and will face the St Francis Humphrey winner in the second round at 2 pm. Twelve teams compete in Osceola including Beaver Crossing Brainard Cedar Rapids Clarks Genoa Leigh Osceola Platte Center Polk St Francis Humphrey St Edward and Stromsburg.
Wayne Harrington died Saturday night from injuries after a head on crash about sixty miles north of York on Highway 81. He suffered a skull fracture chest injuries and both legs broken when his pickup hit a tree. The truck was demolished and debris flew about one hundred feet. Harrington had previously lost an arm in a corn picker accident earlier this fall.
The Polk drive postponed Tag Day due to late supply deliveries. The American Legion and Auxiliary sponsor the fundraiser for heart disease research asking for support and tagging assistance from volunteers.
The Faithful Workers Club hosted an annual February gathering for husbands at Arborville Town Hall. Mesdames Martin Hoffman Sr Lyle Dornburgh and Harold Miller organized cards and refreshments for the event.
February 25 features Eastern Star events followed by February 26 American Legion activities. On February 27 and 28 the Country Woman's Club hosts meetings as listed on the social calendar.
The Happy Hour Club met at Mrs. Doyle Munns home on Friday February 8 with eight members present. Mrs Lowell Bills led the entertainment and plans were made for a future meeting with Mrs Wayne Lindholm and hostess Mrs Bill Lavelle.
Martin Dahlin, endorsed 100 percent by the Polk Commercial Club, announced Wednesday morning his bid for Polk County Commissioner from the Third District. At 4 p.m. no other candidate had filed and incumbent Eli Johnson indicated he would not seek re election.
Henry Elmer Shostrom born April 6 1891 on his father’s Stromsburg Nebraska farm died February 16 1952 after an accident. He married Mathelna Johnson March 25 1914 and lived in Swede Plain then Stromsburg. Survived by wife two daughters two sons in law four grandchildren three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services February 19 at Swede Plain Church with Rev Paul Walker and Rev John Ekwall officiating. Burial in Swede Plain Cemetery.
Harvard defeated Polk 43 to 36 on Harvard's home floor to take an early lead and hold it through the game. Polk outscored Harvard only in the final quarter as Ken Werner led Polk with 11 points and Ron Nyberg benefited from a lineup shift.
Four county high schools participated in the County Government clinic held at Osceola Court House. Nominations and campaigning followed a regular election format with three commissioners per school plus roles for county treasurer judges assessor clerk of District Court attorney clerk sheriff superintendent and welfare director. Mail to and from Polk via truck shows morning arrivals from the east at 8 30 a m and west arrivals at 4 00 p m. Outgoing mail now uses streamlined Omaha trains, with night air connections from Omaha to all destinations. Two rehearsals are planned this week for the Polk Community Chorus ahead of Palm Sunday. The first will be Thursday night February 21 at 8:30 at the Methodist Church. Sunday’s rehearsal will follow the usual time at the Evangelical Free Church.
Frank Davis grew ill over time and was moved by ambulance to Methodist Hospital in Omaha last Saturday. He remained there for several days with Mrs. Davis expected to return to Polk today. Mrs. Eldon Johnson has been acting in charge of the Drug Store in his absence.
About 300 women and girls registered for the Valentine Tea hosted by Miss Lucado and the Homemaking department with two sessions. Exhibits featured Sterling and antique silver plus Durlyte tableware. musical numbers by JoAnn Deuker Carlyn Strand Sheralee Hill and demonstrations by Virginia Harding Ro Jean Nelson Margaret Gordon on table settings china crystal and silver. A film Our Heritage explained silver history patterns and making, with patterns from Gorham Towle and Cirlyte noted.
The American Legion Auxiliary announces an Americanism essay contest in Polk County schools. The topic is What Should Our Government Mean to the American People. Open to junior and senior high students. rules posted at schools. Local unit offers a prize, and the top entry advances to regional competition with a $25 savings bond awarded to the national winner.
