Alfred Norris returns with a tale of a 90 year old sourdough starter and plans to test a recipe. The Polk Commercial Club may publish the sourdough method for public use. The column notes snow cleanup by town workers and a Cub Scouts kite project sparked by Fran Howe.
Population of Polk has risen about 10 percent since 1960 and a 40 person increase was noted in estimates by Norris Al. At a Commercial Club meeting led by Lloyd Stromberg the group discussed Sour dough Days and a possible donation page to promote community improvements. The Johnson family hosted an open house for Jennie Johnson's 80th birthday with 75 guests in attendance.
The Stromsburg American Legion Auxiliary hosted a 1 pm luncheon on February 9 inviting the Polk unit. Attendees included Myrtle Johnson and others while William Schernikau, Stromsburg High School English teacher, spoke about teaching in an all Negro school in Atlanta, Ga. The note from Fran Howe explains a lengthy setup, and Miss Cheryl Stohl was installed as vice president in charge of scholarship at Kearney State.
Polk Chicago area school reports final home game of the Goldenrod Conference season a 69 to 57 victory over Palmer. Dennis Sealey 15 points Gary Sagehorn 14 Larry Johnson 13 and Bob Rahrs 13 lead Polk with 21 rebounds by Carlstrom and Sagehorn. Palmer's Mick Nickel scored 21. Polk shoots 36 percent while Palmer hit 27 percent from the floor.
Polk High School hosted a Tuesday concert February 9 at the Auditorium. Fifth grade beginners led the show with solos and small groups. The stage band performed Java and other pieces while Ann Otte played flute with Lorraine Reckner. Sixth grade trumpet trio Duane Tenniges Gail Widga and David Stromberg showcased, and the junior band played Safari and more. Beck Stevens Karen Miller and Sheila OShea offered a clarinet trio. The senior band performed Henry Purcell Voluntary with Arlyce Lind and Myrna Merchant on trumpet as a sax quartet joined. Mr Ferrow emceed and Hans Willadsen directed.
