An automatic grain measuring device will be manufactured in Polk after a year of testing. Don and Dwayne Miller, Ed Reckner, and Bob Merchant of E&R Welding Shop developed a sturdy portable steel unit that totals grain weight as it pours from an overhead bin spout. More details and pictures will appear in The Progress next week.
The National Farm Organization plans another Polk Community Hall meeting next Thursday February 22 at 8 00 PM. Harold Woodward from Missouri will speak after an area gathering in Wahoo. A lunch will be served after the session.
Representatives of Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Co Inc of Hastings met with the village board in adjourned regular session and the board voted to grant a franchise to lay gas lines in Polk for 25 years. The firm seeks FPC approval to deliver natural gas before the next heating season. underground lines will be about 30 inches deep, with work in alleys where possible.
Philip Meline completed the purchase of an appointment barber shop in Grand Island this week and plans to take over immediately. The shop sits in the First National Bank building after the previous owner’s death. The Klip ’n Karl Shoppe in Polk will close until a buyer is found.
Mrs. Elmer Anderson announced that Bert Benjamin, formerly of Polk, died at his son’s home in Caldwell Idaho on February 5 at age 87. Burial took place in Whittier California on February 8.
Earl Rosenberry a farmer near Shelby filed as a Democrat candidate for County Commissioner District 1. Guilford D Bryan of Osceola filed as Republican candidate for District 2 and is an incumbent.
Mr Eddie Larson and Connie of York along with Mrs Martha Larson and Mr Theo Larson visited the Leonard Nelson home Sunday afternoon. Rev Elmer Logan and Betty also visited the Larson home Friday afternoon.
Polk High will send fourteen students to represent the school at the 32nd annual Kearney Inter Scholastic Contests on Friday March 23. Names and tested subjects include Janice Smith General Science and Elem Algebra Galen Sterner Biology Leon Stromberg American History Cheryl Stohl Clothing and Textiles Joan Larkin Novice Shorthand and English Usage Beverly Ekdahl Standard Foods Bonnie Hanquist Spanish Typing Janice Anderson Spanish Regy Green Chemistry and Government Joyce Stewart Government Marlene Coover World Geography Gary Stevens World Geography John Reckner World History Geometry Ron Johnson Advanced Algebra Medals will be awarded to top three finishers. District tournament opening rounds start February 20 with doors at 5 00 p m Tuesday and 6 00 p m Wednesday and 7 00 p m Friday Polk hosts Silver Creek February 22 at 1 30 p m in the high school auditorium. Public invited. Annual pictures set for February 20 including cheerleaders Junior High basketball Pep Club Music Groups Beginning Band basketball pictures and more.
Polk varsity boys beat Genoa 75 to 25 as Max Kroger posts 27 points and 20 rebounds. Alvin Kisler adds 18 and Calvin Crow 11, with reserves winning 27 to 18. The Cubs host Henderson next, then travel to Shelby for the district tournament starting February 20 versus Rising City.
The Hordville basketball team starts district tourney play next Tuesday night at Marquette when they meet Palmer. Giltner and Hordville hold the 1 and 2 seeds in the district. Other teams entered include Nebr Christian Phillips Cairo and Marquette. The Marquette winner advances to the regional at Broken Bow.
A baby boy named Rodney Ray Ostrander, 8 pounds 12 ounces, born February 9 to Mr. and Mrs. James Ostrander in Columbus. Cedar Rapids couple Mr. and Mrs. James Adelson announce daughter Susan Renee, 6 pounds 1 ounce, born February 9. Grandparents Willard Adelson and Robert Schlondort noted. Litzenberg Memorial Hospital in Central City welcomed Jean Renee, 7 pounds 4 ounces, born February 3 to Mr. and Mrs. Schlondort.
Mrs Raymond Sundberg spent last week in Lincoln visiting her daughter and family. The visit was reported from Page Ten with notes about Mr Story and Mrs Charles Stromberg in attendance.
