A baby boy weighing seven pounds ten ounces was born on February 6 at Stromsburg Hospital to Mr and Mrs Clarence Meerkatz.
Polk bowling teams dominated. Johnnie's Ramblers went 2 1 while Kroger's Store swept all three against Robert's Dairy. High scores include Harold Green 191 and Floyd Lyle 190 as averages and results note Ralph Fisher 165 for Kroger's Store.
Dr. Harry S. Johnson, a 63 year old veterinarian and WWII veteran, formerly inspector with the Production and Marketing Administration, died Monday January 29 in Central City. Funeral services were held Friday at Salts funeral home. Surviving are his wife, two daughters, two sons, six brothers and several relatives from Washington Canada Grand Island Denver Polk Rawlins Wyoming.
Polk snooker players rolled past Sutton 482 to 40 to push their season record to 7 wins and 7 losses. Virgil Bush led with 93 points for Polk, while Virgil Flodman was close behind with 92 points.
Religious notices and community events from Immanuel Lutheran Church include a baptism of Deborah Dona Kay Scheapler at the parents home with Pastor Long officiating. John Holmes leads Polk with 19 points in a tight non conference loss to Henderson on their court. Dennis Light scores 21, Jack Myers contributes eight, while Polk errors at the line hurt their comeback bid in the final frame.
The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs hosted a farewell for Mr. and Mrs. Roy Elliston at a Thursday lodge gathering. They move to Grand Island to reside, with cards and a covered dish lunch provided. A lamp was presented as a parting gift.
The W S C S of the Methodist Church held its February meeting with leaders Mrs. F Anderson Mrs. Irvin Anderson and Mrs. Lloyd Hahn. Sondra Hill read Our Number One Job and Mrs S D Evans from Stromsburg reviewed In the Far East and spoke on the United Nations. Hostesses included Mrs. Merle Stromsburg Mrs Leslie Adelson Mrs Henry Kisler and Mrs Art Gustafson.
Rohde and Wayne Glasser cared for Mrs. Wm. Meyer this past week. A wedding at York Presbyterian Church united Miss Janette Johnson and Robert L. Hilebrand with several locals in attendance. Various moves and visits across towns linked to Olson, Carlson, Benson, Wilshusen and Scheapler families as well as upcoming army service for Kenneth Wilshusen.
The Polk Community Chorus plans Sunday rehearsals at 2 30 in the Baptist Church. A 52-voice group drew representation from all five area churches and invites all ages from high school up to join. The weekly session favors afternoon timing for economy and heat.
Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Wurtz entertained Sunday with a birthday dinner in honor of the anniversary of their granddaughter Mrs. Robert Baack. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Robert Baack and children Oscar Jones Lowell Bills Max Jones Connie and Ralph Shafer of Grand Island.
Mr and Mrs Ivan Cramer hosted an anniversary gathering Monday evening with cards and gifts from guests. A luncheon followed for attendees Dean Ostberg Ray Werner Sid Crow Reuben Anderson Everett Cramer and Clarence Clair.
The WSCS of Swede Plain church will gather in the church parlors Wednesday at 2:00 PM on February 14. Mrs Curtis Flodman and Miss Mabel Shostrom are hostesses and the program is led by Mrs Nettie Carlson.
Pleasant Home 4-H group met January 31 with seven members. Stanley Hanquist led the session. demonstrations covered a calf pen and pig brooders by the County Agent. Plans were made to attend 4-H Achievement Day at Polk on February 3. Bingo and lunch followed. Next meeting is with Jimmie Adelson on February 16.
Mr and Mrs Elwyn Johnson were Columbus visitors Saturday as noted in a brief social item.
Polk County honors Seth and Mrs Piper for 57 years of marriage and lifelong service. They moved from Illinois and Iowa in the 1880s to farm near Polk. Mrs Piper helped organize the Willing Workers 4-H club in 1821, led sewing groups, joined the Twentieth Century Club, and chaired the local Red Cross during World War I. The couple raised turkeys and were active in Farm Bureau and election boards.
The Golden Wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sundberg in Covenant Church drew 275 friends and relatives. Relatives visiting from Onida South Dakota Pender Denver Lincoln Polk include Mrs. Sundberg's sisters Mrs. Burgeson Mrs. Rodgers, daughter Mrs. Johnson, son Mr. Sundberg and grandson Jerry Sundberg.
Mrs Lillie King mother of Mrs Chas Lytle marked her 96th birthday Monday at the Lytle home. Sherale and Sondra Hill played happy birthday on their horns outside. Eastern Star ladies from York brought a cake with 96 candles and left gifts. Relatives from York visited and other local friends called or sent cards and treats.
More than 100 attended Polk County 4-H Achievement Day at M. E. Church. County Agent Carder Throckmorton's talk compared years of work, noting 172 enrolled in 1949 and 157 in 1950 with 69 percent versus 86 percent completion.
Mrs Kenneth Stewart hosted five preschool friends for Donnies fifth birthday on Sunday. The gathering featured games and a lunch with a birthday cake. Families visiting included Gerald Stevens and son. Glen Rose of Cozad. Roy Spadlin of Brady. Lavar Sandell family. Attendees joined the Lincoln General Hospital School of Nursing capping ceremonies where Charlotte Rose, daughter of Glen Rose and sister of Mrs Sandell, was part of the class.
Mr and Mrs Robert Shostrom hosted an open house at their home on Sunday for 130 relatives and friends celebrating their Silver Anniversary. Guests included out of town honorees Mer vin Carlson and Minland Hanquist with a guest book managed by Marjorie Nielsen and a program featuring Mrs Lloyd Lind and Karen Shostrom. Refreshments of coffee ice cream cake and mints were served as well as gifts and plane note of congratulations.
The Arborville Shiners 4-H Club met January 31 at Town Hall with nine members and parents. Julia Ann Flick led the meeting. lunch was provided by Arthur Shultz family and mothers. Next regular meeting set for February 28 with Irvin Pabens as host. Several local families were noted visiting or hosting gatherings, and Faye continues to recover from injuries.
Kindergarten and first graders enjoy a science book and stories while Carol Stroup returns from Wyoming. The high school raises 38.10 for March of Dimes as fifth and sixth grades study Rome and the Star Spangled Banner. County government participants for Osceola on February 15 include a long list of county officials and staff.
The annual Farmers Union Co operative Oil Association of Polk County meeting was held Saturday January 27 at Stromsburg High School Auditorium. Reports showed a successful year. Myron Jones elected director for Osceorgeou whose term expired. Lunch served by Naomi Society. After dinner an adjourned meeting adopted amended Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws.
Mr and Mrs Irvin Anderson hosted a supper honoring Mrs Walter Binford and Lloyd Hahn whose birthdays fall on February 7. Guests included Walter Binford Lloyd Hahn and their daughters Glen Hill and Will Stevens with their spouses.
Sondra Lee Peterson celebrated a birthday. Mr and Mrs Walter Ely of Aurora visited Mr and Mrs R E Merchant. Francis Brown Vergil Tenniges and their families joined the Fred D Shockeys Friday. Vernon Hackbarth family hosted visitors at Hastings. Sunday guests of Harvey Wochner included Grant Johnson Leand Bower Kenneth John Wochner and George. Lowell Bills hosted Charles Norquest family and John Bills. Rawleigh Merchant returned home from York General Hospital improving though in a cast for 12 weeks. Mrs Fred Bedient is home with bronchial pneumonia. Children visited Sunday with Martin Hoff man.
Mrs Hattie Lindquist received a severe head cut Sunday evening after a fall. She was treated at Stromsburg Hospital and Monday went to the home of her daughter Mrs Virgil Bush. Mrs Arnold Neuhaus returned Wednesday from Clarkson.
