Hugh Smith traveling salesman for an Omaha hardware firm recounted a near fatal ordeal on a Monday evening while en route from Marquette to Polk. His car became stuck in a deep snow drift near Hardville. After digging out, he grew warm, felt confused, and wandered aimlessly until Ed Johnsons farm two miles west of Polk was found. Johnsons family thawed him, placed him in bed, and he is now recovering. The incident is described as serious but life saved by timely help.
The Lemuel R Wilcox Post of the American Legion through Adjutant Dr C R Peterson urges Polk area veterans to submit adjust ed service certificate applications soon for Baby Bonds to be issued by June 16 1936. Veterans may have bonds cashed or accrue 3 percent interest if held. About fifty veterans stand to gain roughly 25000 total. bond values range from 90 to 1582 dollars. Veterans are cautioned not to sell bonds below face value.

Miss Maxine Barr married Floyd Merchant on Wednesday February 6 at three o’clock at the Barr home northwest of York. Rev Ram sey of York Presbyterian Church performed the ceremony in front of close relatives and a few friends. The bride, daughter of Mr and Mrs James Barr, is a York high school and York College student. the groom, son of Mr and Mrs H E Merchant of Polk, is a York High School and York College graduate. A reception will follow at the groom’s parents’ home. The couple will begin housekeeping in March on the Chas McGinnis farm south of Polk.
Mr and Mrs Willard Adelson paid a social call at the Rome home of Mrs Adelsons parents Mr and Mrs John Johnson in Swede Home Punday.
A communication from the officer commanding the U S S Colorado at San Pedro California informs that Cohagen son of W I Cohagen has qualified as pointer on an antiaircraft gun and will take part in future target practice. The Colorado class ships carry the fleet's largest guns and Cohagen has made an excellent naval record, with friends in the locality pleased by the news.
Jack Minnick of Cambridge visited his parents Dr. and Mrs. R. L. Minnick. Margaret Olson returned to the University of Nebraska after a visit with her parents. Mrs. C. F Moore and son Stanton visited relatives in Omaha and Lincoln. The Fire Department battled a chimney blaze at Mrs. Abbie Richards’ home with minimal loss. Russell Olson missed work due to snow in Grand Island. Stromsburg teachers attended an education meeting in York with educational pictures. York Republican banquet drew about 150 attendees. Ivan Bengtson family visited Hardville relatives. Robert and Roy Minnick enrolled at Doane College for the second semester. Clarence Burreson, recovering from seven week old injuries, returned from Lincoln hospital. Max Carey left Wesleyan University to spend winter with his parents and join the high school study center in Stromsburg. A. L. Erickson returned from Lincoln and June Erickson and Jack Toole joined him for midsemester break. H. J. Beckman and sons visited Lincoln. Dorothy Beckman returned home after hospitalization. Axel Altberg spent the weekend in Stromsburg with Ericka Headman and family and Victor Alberg. Many social events scheduled for the week were postponed due to bad weather.
H M McGaffin former publisher of the Progress and publisher in Wilcox Nebraska for three months announced this week he has sold the paper to a Kansas publisher effective immediately. He did not reveal future plans.
Polk County agriculture officials offer free seed corn testing for farmers using corn as seed. Each sample should include 100 ears with one or two kernels per ear. The test measures live kernels and percentages of good, medium, and poor kernels, with reports mailed to farmers.

Various visits by Sward family, Fredrickson family, and others noted amid winter travel disruptions. The W W G meeting postponed due to weather.
John N Norton of Polkaay plans to oppose Representative G Binderup in the coming race. The Hastings Daily Tribune notes Norton’s past losses in the Democratic primary and compares a potential Norton upset to surprising sports upsets.

McCoy. Several small gatherings, luncheons, and birthday celebrations highlighted community life. Henry Johnson transported cattle to Omaha for market with Oscar Mremberg.

With W P A help, 15 growers will receive individual analyses and nationwide averages to compare farms while maintaining privacy. Complete 1935 books, or start anew for 1936 by listing inventories and assets for office input. Deadline set by March first.
Fred Schmidt reports Mr and Mrs Rivne and Mr and Mrs Shockey visited at the home of the latter's brother in Sieing City on Sunday. Children were present during the family gathering.
A Puller firm truck driver faced heavy snow six miles east of Polk on Monday evening. He walked into Polk to buy a kerosene stove and brought it back to keep perishable merchandise from freezing. The driver endured a long night in an enclosed cab at eighteen below zero and earned consideration for a substantial raise.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Carlson home and Swede Plain church, with interment at Swede Plain cemetery. survived by his father Alfred Carlson and siblings Claus Oberg Alice Carlson Nankie Carlson and Gordon Carlson.
