Polking Around: Norris Alfred to Run The Polk Progress

Norris Alfred will take over ownership and operation of The Polk Progress starting January 1. The current publisher reflects fondly on 15 months with Polk readers, praises the community, and notes editor Larry Johnson will leave for navy service in January. Polk basketball remains undefeated and the holiday schedule includes a Dec. 28–29 tournament at Marquette.

Polk Cubs Stay Unbeaten In Victory Over Genoa Orioles

Polk remains undefeated after an 80 69 win over Genoa with Don Sealey scoring 27 and Allen Neuhaus 17 for the Cubs. Genoa’s L Pilakowski led with 20 as Polk’s reserve unit also won 48 47. The Junior Varsity beat Genoa B 56 30 while St Edward pins Polk to 33 percent shooting and Polk’s second team defeats St Edward’s B. Country Woman’s Club held a Christmas party at Ollie Johnson’s home with 15 members and 3 guests.

Polk Countian Aided Stellar Star Navigation Study

First Lieutenant John I Molinder of Stromsburg helped develop STAFF, a stellar and inertial guidance system tested by a Special Air Force Systems Command team from Norton AFB at Cape Kennedy. Using the North Star, the missile with a Polaris A 1 booster could correct its flight path and reach precise trajectories amid simulated adverse conditions. Molinder, a McPherson high school graduate with degrees from Nebraska and the Air Force Institute of Technology, is married to Janet Ahlquist of Osceola.

Christmas Program Shines At Polk High Gym

A large Polk High gym crowd enjoyed Monday night’s Christmas program by Larry Johnson. The event featured standard choir numbers and skits, with kindergarten and first grade parts delighting the audience. Teachers and Mrs. Cunningham earned praise for organizing a memorable show that encouraged the young performers.
