Dear Norris writes that Alderman's Law asserts it is easier to get into something than out of it. He applies this to debt, marriage, clubs, and farming, noting rising costs and scarce returns as farmers chase expensive gear while prices fall. He calls for reevaluating farming methods and criticizes greed over practicality.
The Jul Otta service will start at 6 a.m. Sunday Christmas morning at the Polk Evangelical Free Church. All are invited for song, sharing, and remembrance of Christ. Best wishes for a blessed Christmas and a happy New Year from Polk church members.
Polk High School boys basketball rolled to a 75-58 win over Genoa on the Oriole floor and then beat St Edward 61-53 away to push their record to 5-0. Curt Burney led Polk with 26 points against Genoa and 18 in the St Edward game, while Mark Clymer added 17 in the St Edward contest as Polk built a 14-12 first-quarter lead and widened it by halftime. The Cubs dominated despite early foul trouble, receiving strong contributions from Burney, Clymer, Tallman, Hudson and Branting, and getting bench depth that helped seal both victories. The Beavers were paced by Brad Williams with 16 and Brad Stevens 15, but could not overcome Polk's late rallies and free-throw finish.
Peggy Neeman daughter of Mr and Mrs Elmer Neeman of Polk earned a straight A 4.0 average and was named to the Presidents Honor List for work at Grand Island School of Business in the fall quarter. She is enrolled in the Accounting Program and expects to graduate in March 97.
The Arborville Congregational Church Sunday School plans a program on Friday December 23 at 8 00 PM. The public is invited to attend at the church.
Polk girls face Hordville at 6 30 p m and Polk boys meet Hordville at 8 p m Thursday in the Hampton Invitational Tourney. Hampton and Nelson are also in the holiday event.
The girls extended their win streak to three with a 51 19 victory over the Clarks Bombers at Clarks on Thursday night December 15. Michel Sandell led scoring with 15, Deb Bankson added 10 and Bankson grabbed 15 rebounds with Sandell collecting 10.
Donations include 25.00 from Mr and Mrs Jim Lindburg and 54.50 from Ginger Bread House tickets. Anne Widga made the houses and gift, with lucky ticket holders Linda Sundberg Carol Wall and Mary Jane Samuels. Six boxes of books arrived from Munsing Wear, sent by Alex MacMinn. Library closes December 24 and 31.
Mrs Alice Walden of Central City and Mrs Mary Salchow are patients at Central City hospital. Mrs Gerhard Dose is hospitalized at Lincoln General in Lincoln. Carl Carlstrom returned home from Clarkson hospital in Omaha. Billy Smelker five was severely scalded at home and has been hospitalized for four weeks at Penrose hospital Cole Springs before returning home. Grandparents Roger Gustafson and Alan Pickrel with families visited Smelker. Gustafsons were en route home from Tucson Arizona after ten days.
The Center for Rural Affairs will hold its 5th annual meeting on Saturday January 7 in Walthill. The public event features a rural issues fair an educational seminar on high voltage electric power lines and direct farmer to consumer marketing plus evening supper entertainment by Dr. Roanley of Lincoln and a square dance.
Pork business houses will be closed Monday December 26 as will The Progress office on Saturday December 24 and reopen Monday December 26. Local firms observe holiday hours in last week of December.
About two hundred people attended the Santa event on Main Street to enter a free drawing for $5 gift certificates. Prizes went to Cindy Lukas, Grayce Burney, Lyla Meerkat z, Marcia Carlstrom, and others. Winners in the house decorating contest included Mack Ditloff, with other prizes announced for Vern Jones and Don Miller.
Senior Citizens Card Party scheduled for Tuesday December 27 at 2 00 p m at Legion Hall invites local seniors to join in games and social activities for afternoon.
Ruth Branting a Bethesda Care Center resident in Central City will celebrate her 89th birthday on December 22.
