Pam Ostberg lit the Main St lights as 47 children sang around the tree but a top wire connection broke, leaving only one strand lit. Winds chilled the town as teachers and children earned dimes for singing, while jokes and old anecdotes filled the snowy night.
Polk high school suffered its first loss in 32 straight games as Hampton Hawks led 27-19 at half and stayed unbeaten with a 47-40 victory. Sundberg 14 and Kroger 13 led Polk, while Quiring 18 and Jones 13 paced Hampton.
Nine students at Hordville High School earn honor roll status for the second six weeks. Seniors Kathy Tyler Sharon Benson and Dale Carlson make the list along with Patty Stranberg Dorothy Stranberg Craig Erickson Linda Andreasen Carolyn Kortum and Dan Tyler. The grade school Christmas operetta is set for Tuesday December 18 at 7 30 p.m. in the auditorium. Public welcome with no admission charge. Next home basketball game versus Bradshaw is Friday December 14. Christmas vacation runs from Friday December 21 at 2 00 p.m. to resume classes Wednesday January 2.
The Immanuel Lutheran Church basement hosted the Ladies Aid annual Christmas party on December 9 at 6:30 p.m. Rev. Ernc Schulke read the Christmas story, Gilbert Driewer showed films, gifts were exchanged, secret pals revealed, and children received presents with candy nuts and popcorn balls.
The David City Federal Land Bank Association will distribute 11708 in dividends to its 500 farmer stockholders this week. Manager Alvin M. Grubaugh announced the payment from the 102 associations serving Iowa Nebraska South Dakota and Wyoming. The local group makes long term farm real estate loans in Butler and Polk counties. Directors include Arnold P. Fredrickson Gresham president Walter P. Hilger David City vice president Adolph B. Codk Dwight and Coyle Fadschild David City.
Odd Fellows and Rebekahs and families and guests gathered Thursday evening November 29 for their annual pheasant supper and entertainment. Three long tables overflowed with dishes while cards provided the main entertainment for the night.
Mrs Henry Reed was admitted to Aurora hospital on December 6. Mrs Lester Rehrs is a patient in Aurora hospital. Martin Smith was admitted to York hospital on Friday. Mrs Art Dose is in York hospital recovering from a broken ankle.

Olga Elvera Jerner 65 died December 6 1962 in Osceola hospital after living in Polk most of her life She was born November 24 1897 in Loomis Nebraska daughter of Carl and Anna Jerner She married Wilbur Whitacre December 26 1917 and had four children Among survivors are her husband three daughters eighteen grandchildren and a brother Orion Jerner of Lincoln Services held December 9 at First Baptist Church Polk with Rev Elmer Logan officiating and interment at Arborville Cemetery
Mr and Mrs Reuben Hanquist visited last week with Mr and Mrs Arlan Hanquist and family at Hugoton Kansas from Thursday until Monday On their return they visited Mr and Mrs Vern Thorells at Loomis on Monday.
Baptist Young Adults held a Christmas party with games lunch and gift exchange. Elton Flodman sings with Bethany College chorus. Local residents attended concerts dinners and visits across Linsborg Hastings Central City and Lincoln. Officiants and hosts included Mrs. R C Gustafson Beverly Mrs. Paul Jones and Lyle Djemer family.
The East Side Birthday Club met Friday afternoon December 7 with Mrs. Ester Lackey. Twelve members and three visitors attended. The gathering featured social time and a short Christmas poem program, followed by refreshments served by Mrs. Lackey.
