More than 125 4 H club members and guests gathered at the Polk Community Hall on Friday evening November 23 1962 for the County 4 H Achievement program. Alumni honors went to Ansel Fredrickson and Ivan Sundberg for a late 1920s livestock judging team that won the state championship and excelled nationally. Notable achievers included Sondra Hill Rugene Lees Betty Lees Linda McKeag Doris Swanson and Lionel Swanson with Club Congress trips and citizenship honors. Special awards went to Ted Gleim Beverly Wieseman Sherill Erickson and others with Gold Medal winners numbering 85 for 1963. County Farm Bureau also funded long term membership and junior leader pins.
December 14 is the final day to enroll in the 1963 Wheat Stabilization Program for winter wheat farms. Albert A. Francke ASCS chairman announced that less than two weeks remain to file applications. Growers should enroll only the acreage they plan to divert from 1963 production.
Four seventh graders and two eighth graders earned the Junior High Honor Roll for the second six weeks. Seventh graders are Glee Killion Carol Litty Daniel Graves Beverly Willits. Eighth graders include Margaret Rosno and Dennis Stevens.
E and H savings bond purchases in Polk County totaled $57,563 during October, per A. E. Bodine, volunteer county chairman. The ten month sales total reached $448,231, about 64.3 percent of the 1962 county quota.
Paul Gustafson of Lincoln acted as a caller in the O. E. Johnson residence this past Saturday, according to the report.
Karen Stevens and Bonnie Hanquist were chosen to attend the Nebraska State Music Clinic convention in Norfolk from November 15 to 17. Bonnie earned a place among 40 clarinet players in the 165 member band after a Grand Island audition with 93 peers. Karen sang first soprano in a chorus of 500 high school vocalists. Mr. McIntosh also attended the Nebraska Music Educators Convention.
Mrs Wilbur Whitacre is a patient in the Osceola hospital having entered Tuesday.
Polk community urges all businesses to decorate for Christmas by December 8. Children from kindergarten to fourth grade will sing around the tree at 7 30 p m Saturday evening. A free turkey drawing is planned for December 15 from the bandstand.
Mr. and Mrs. Billie Williams of Yutan Nebraska announce the 50th wedding anniversary of their parents Mr. and Mrs. Rolla Williams. The event will take place December 11 in Stromsburg. Cards would be appreciated.
The Farmers Coop Association of Hordville held its annual stockholders meeting and dinner Monday night at Hordville High School with 175 in attendance. Speakers included Wilbur Crown Frank Morgan Alfred Bangs and guest A B Stanning. Otto Mowitz Roy Knutson were reelected to three year terms and Robert Erickson to a one year term. Dividends around 100000 were paid and earnings for the year totaled 90000.
Milwaukee couple Rev. and Mrs Marvin Gruett welcome Ruth Renee born November 16 weighing 5 pounds 12 ounces. Oxford couple Mr and Mrs Gerald King announce Jeffrey Clark born December 2 weighing 7 pounds 1 ounce. Osceola couple Mr and Mrs John Nyberg report Matthew Shayne born December 3 at Annie Jeffrey Memorial weighing T pounds 1 ounce. Clarks couple Mr and Mrs Ronald Glasser greet daughter Ronda Jeanne born Sunday December 2 weighing 7 pounds 7 1/2 ounces.
Community Hall hosts a pancake feed on December 8 from 4 to 8 p.m. Polk and Swede Plain MYF offers all you can eat for 55 cents. Proceeds support MYF activities.
Parents attended the Polk Grade School second six weeks conferences with 100 percent turnout. Many families had both parents present and more fathers participating. The conferences supplement Report Cards and aim to foster parent-teacher collaboration to support student progress. Teachers praised the turnout and positive parent attitudes.
Polk Woman's Club held a 1 o'clock luncheon at Mrs. Leslie Adelson's home for its December gathering with 16 members present. Members chose a shut in to gift at Christmas. A Christmas program featured Mrs. Sundberg and Mrs. Stevens, with songs, devotions, stories, and poems. Next meeting set for 8 at Mrs. Parker Aker's home.
The Happy Hour Club collected 148.56 for the Opportunity Center for Retarded Children in Columbus on Saturday November 17. Door to door and business donations are listed with small contributions from Legion Post 160 and its auxiliary along with local clubs.
